Visual storytelling has been around since humans populated the Earth, but today's popularity is influenced by technology's impact on our attention spans and information retention. The way we consume content today it's significantly different from the pre-smartphone era. Two key factors contribute to this shift: the challenge of reading on small screens and the dominance of scrolling over clicking. With information overload, our brains have developed a great capacity to filter and discard content that does not catch our attention. That's why images act as neon signs, saying, "Hey, read me." But not all images. Only those presenting content in a concise visual mini-story format. Today, visual storytelling is effective only when it's concise.

There's a reason behind the old saying “a picture is worth more than a thousand words”. It's because it's quicker and easier to understand a picture than to read. We get 80% of our sensory impressions through our eyes, and we live in a world overloaded with information. In this context, it’s pretty obvious why using visual storytelling makes sense. Now, it’s easy to think that you should use visual storytelling to stand out. That’s definitely a good reason too. But another great reason is that it’s simply the best way to communicate. Adding visuals to your explanation makes it much easier for people to understand what you're trying to say. This is especially true when you're explaining complex ideas.

There is no asking "why?" for this one! It's like asking why breathe? As everyone rightly pointed out, visual storytelling is part of Humanity's lore, period. The question then transforms into "when?" Visuals are better when they convey more than words, just as words are necessary when visuals can have different interpretations. Certain things need explaining not only to convey the full message, but also to bridge any cultural gaps in the final understanding. That done, the right visuals can wrap up your presentation in a pleasing manner. To "understand" means to stand under (a structure) to see how well it is supported. With this kind of understanding, evaluate your balance of visuals and words and see how well they support your message.

Visuals and stories can be regarded as universal languages capable of transcending time, cultural differences, and language barriers. This attribute makes visual storytelling a powerful tool for reaching diverse audiences and conveying messages that resonate across various demographics.

In a newsroom context, visual storytelling reigns supreme. Drawing is a universal language. It doesn't matter what the reader's native language is, a well drawn image can help attract user's attention. In this generation of knowledge workers generation, data, text and other artefacts are being generated at an exponential rate. Sometimes it is not easy for a new person joining to absorb all the information in one go. That's where adding more and more visual story telling elements and the basic human nature to adapt to drawings can be super beneficial

Define the message. Communicate for broad understanding incorporating universally recognized visual elements like symbols, images, and gestures. Embrace simplicity.

I think one of the most important things you can do is choose a visual storytelling method that you are good at and comfortable with. For example, I'm really good at video and animations, but I find carousels challenging. Both are styles of visual storytelling, but I feel that I explain things better with video and animation than with carousels. I see others create fantastic carousels and admire them for it. Find your way of visual storytelling, it will resonate with your audience and they’ll reward you for it.

Yes you need to get clear on your audience, your purpose, and your message. But don't forget to also work out the STORY of the message you want to tell, before jumping into the visual part. Is it a story over time? Have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Is it a story of progression or transformation? Show how someone or something gets better. And what value do you want to tap into, in your audience? Justice? Achievement? Belonging? What story will convey that value?

Visual storytelling makes complex ideas relatable and easier to understand. For example, in a project on gender-based violence, we used illustrations overlaid on a survivor’s testimonial. This approach didn't just complement her story but made it more personal and accessible. It allowed viewers to connect with the issue emotionally. Science tells us that we receive some 11 million bits of data at any given moment, of which our conscious brain selects just 40, those it can handle and considers 'relevant' according to a person's background; the rest goes in anyway, but into our subconscious mind which cannot filter or judge, it just assimilates stuff that will surface sooner or later without most people noticing where such ideas came from, for we are mostly unconscious most of the time and pay little attention to our own processes. That said, take a moment to consider what your Integrity tells you: Be mindful of what you create, because you are shaping people's behavior and world outlook with your visuals, and THIS is what you need to keep always in YOUR conscious mind.

To captivate news audiences, ditch static visuals and embrace Motion Graphics, Augmented Reality Graphics, VFX and CGI! Immerse viewers in the heart of stories, break down complex concepts with visual metaphors, add emotional depth, and push storytelling boundaries to leave a lasting impact. Remember, VFX and CGI are tools to complement, not overshadow, the narrative. So, go forth and create news that audience will experience, not just read.

Decide the keywords or key themes that encapsulates your message. Lay them out in a nice format and apply visual hierarchy themes to add visual icons and metaphors around the keywords. Once the flow is established, do sure to end the story with an actionable takeaway. What do you want the reader to do next?

Its goal has always been to depict objective reality, to capture the visual representation of a story. I always tell my students that storytelling is not something you can master in one night. It requires a considerable amount of practice, receiving constructive feedback, and being self-critical. In my personal experience, what has significantly helped me improve my skills is developing my own content and presenting it to diverse audiences in various scenarios, preferably in person. This allows me to gauge the understanding and level of engagement I receive throughout the presentation. All of the above becomes much easier the more you get to know your audience.

There are really only three things you need to learn visual storytelling. First, you need interest. Second, you need YouTube. And third, you need the ability to try and fail. The amazing thing about the world we live in today is that all the information you need to become a great visual storyteller is available. All you have to do seek out the info and put in the necessary effort to get good at it.

You can learn visual storytelling through books, online blogs, and courses. The best way to enhance your skills is by practicing within your personal or professional projects. Learning through practical experience is often the most effective way to improve.

I believe the best ways to develop visual storytelling skills are both doing and seeing/watching others. It's important to study, to learn from other. It's important to understand trends (fonts, colors, images, visual languages, etc) and to understand how it works and how these elements can be applied to your specific needs. But also trying. Learn by doing! Try doing things, try new things, learn from your own experiences can be a rich way to improve yourself.

Something we give as homework during our storytelling workshop is to go back to a story where you thought the visuals were very impactful, and deconstruct it: why did you relate to the images/video? What makes this visual so strong? By going into detail about the emotional connection you felt, you'll be able to understand you can bring it into your work.

SketchNoting can be a great start to get going on the visual story telling journey. Lots of tutorials and YouTube videos and a fantastic community is available to support on your journey. The key is practice and discipline to learn and install this habit. Whiteboarding with Friends and colleagues is also a great way to learn and share ideas at the same time.

One very pleasurable way to learn visual storytelling is to see how comic strips and certain graphic novels (not any graphic novel...) are made. I would certainly recommend Calvin & Hobbes for one of the best comic strips ever and Will Eisner's dedicated publication Comics & Sequential Art - Expanded Edition. These will surely enhance your storytelling abilities using visuals whether you're already an artist or just a professional seeking to convey ideas and concepts. As always, a word of caution here is fitting: Before you conceptualize anything, be clear to yourself what you're contributing to. Many an inverted, inherently false and nonsense beliefs can also easily be boosted by storytelling expertise and influence people in a wrong way.

After you've done some of the more important things we all suggested here, such as consulting publications and getting feedback from peers, here are two more things you can do: - Master Illustrator Norman Rockwell used to test both his ideas and finished paintings for Saturday Evening Post covers with the common folk in his neighborhood, a child or passersby. If any of these didn't 'get it' immediately he would simply ditch the idea or painting and take advice from them to improve its communication value. You can do this too, for not only experts and mentors will be seeing your work. - With this perspective, further simplify your lines, concept and final render until you are left with only what is needed to fully convey a worthy idea.

Immersing yourself in movies and game cinematics is a fantastic way to absorb visual storytelling techniques. Watch with a critical eye, analyzing how scenes set the mood, develop characters, and drive the narrative. Pay attention to camera angles, lighting, music, and editing choices, dissecting how they guide your emotions and understanding. Bonus points for rewinding and pausing to fully dissect key moments! Think of these stories as masterclasses in visual communication, and you'll be well on your way to crafting your own captivating visuals.

Visual storytelling is all about creativity. It’s about finding ways to explain, tell, and visualize so that your audience understands it. Be inspired by others and try to recreate what they do. As you get better at it, you'll develop your own style, and that´ll be a mix of everything you've learned from them. Maybe you'll find someone who is extremely good at simplification, another who excels at using metaphors, and a third who is great with colors and contrasts. And all of a sudden, you’ve developed your own unique style.

Drop your fear of judgement and start creating Visual stories. There is no one right way to create a Visual story and your creation will tell a unique story with the same message.

As you know, today we can use many types of visuals, from PPoint presentations to 3D renderings, videos, animation whiteboards and so on that can be projected onto a screen even from a smartphone. But if you're adept at freehand drawing, consider using live hand drawn images that can be fascinating for your viewers to watch and see your confidence on the subject, whether they are in attendance or online. Choose from maps to cartoon gags that are recognizable, in good taste and relevant to the subject matter. Keep to the point, keep things clean, avoid mixing styles that don't blend well. If using text with your images choose a proper font in proper alignment and spacing, avoiding busy backgrounds. Overall design harmony makes a difference!

Don't forget, it's 'visual storytelling', not 'visual telling'. Think about what you want your audience to know (logical); how you want them to feel (emotional); and what you want them to do (practical). Then, think of stories you already know of that focus on the main thing you want to focus on. And go from there.

Most important for me is staying true to one's unique voice and perspective ensures that every illustration reflects passion, authenticity, and purpose.

Keep in mind that visual storytelling will always have new ways of narration; each creative has their own way of visually translating their thoughts, taking into account their own experiences, points of view, and most importantly their authenticity. The more candid a story is, the more captivating it can be.

Think Layman always. Even a CEO likes simple storytelling. You don't have to overdo it. Example if you are working in the healthcare sector. You have 2 audiences who are Healthcare professionals and the Non Healthcare professionals. How do you captivate both audiences? Use layman terms, and simple visuals. Remember flow is everything.
