NFL rookie Justin Fields shares what he eats on his vegan diet

As a starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears, Justin Fields joins the list of plant-based pro athletes who swear that avoiding meat and dairy and loading up on plant-based protein helps boost performance and makes it more healthy. lighter and faster.

Fields is stocking up on plant-based protein the same way tennis great Novak Djokovic and a growing number of other plant-based athletes, including Venus Williams, NBA superstar Chris Paul and the seven-time winner Super Bowl Tom Brady. Every day, it seems like more and more athletes are choosing to skip meat and dairy and rely on plant foods for their winning nutrition.

Fields went vegan in May 2020 when he was quarantined with his family and they decided to eat plant-based as part of a month-long challenge. At the end of the month, he was the only one continuing the diet. “I really liked the way my body felt,” Fields recalled. So while the rest of his family has gone back to eating meat and dairy, Fields is still going strong.

Drafted as the Bears’ number one pick last year from Ohio State, Fields has already had a stellar first season behind him. He scored seven passed TDs and two rushing TDs and credits his new plant-based diet with making him feel “lighter and faster.”

In an exclusive email interview with The Beet, Fields explains why he initially made the decision to go vegan, how he feels and everything he eats in a day, including what he eats to do fuel up for a game and her favorite vegan recipe. that you can create at home.

The Beet: Why and when did you become vegan?

Justin Fields: I started during quarantine as a month-long challenge with my family for my senior season at Ohio State. Once I did it for a few weeks I really liked the way my body felt. The rest of my family quit after the challenge was over, and I kept doing it.

The Beet: How has using herbs affected your athletic performance?

Justin Fields: It has changed the way I feel and the way I perform dramatically. I feel so much lighter and faster. Football as a sport is so hard on your body that I just want to do everything I can to have the longest career possible.

Beetroot: What do you eat in a day?

Justin Fields: I start my day normally drinking coffee, plenty of water and eating fruit. I keep my breakfast pretty light compared to my other meals as my days start very early with training right now.

For the lunch, I will usually try to eat vegan chicken nuggets or maybe a vegan burger. I try to get carbs – either potatoes or rice for energy.

My dinner is also quite similar to my lunch, and at this point in the day I try to make an effort to put in more greens.

At the end of the day, I always get myself a Pro Elite OWYN Chocolate Shake to end my day and boost my protein intake.

What do you eat before and after a game?

Justin Fields: Before a game I don’t eat too much so I don’t get a stomach ache, but after the game I almost always take a Shake OWYN for recovery. Not only do I love the way OWYN shakes make me feel, I actually enjoy them almost like a dessert.

What is your favorite vegetable recipe?

Justin Fields: My favorite plant-based recipe is the falafel burger. I normally eat it a few times a week. Personally, I don’t feel like they taste any different than normal burgers and they have a lot of added benefits, so I love eating them. As a side, I would normally also make sweet potato fries.
