West Seattle’s vegan food scene got off to a good start in 2021. New restaurant Allyum – restaurant industry veterans Dahli Strayer and Ally Rael – opened for New Years Day brunch at 2940 SW Avalon Way with a menu dedicated to plant-based foods and gluten-free tariffs.
Some of the offerings to start with include “meatballs”, carrot benedict, fried mushroom “chicken” and smoked maple waffles and roasted cauliflower okra. Rael tells Eater Seattle that while the menu is mostly vegan, there are plans to eventually serve eggs from ethically raised chickens and oysters and mussels. In the meantime, the two owners will highlight local products in their brunches and dinners. “We’re not big fans of the overuse of fake processed meat substitutes, so pretty much anything we offer will be made in-house,” she says.
Strayer (the opening owner of Luna Park Cafe in West Seattle) and Rael (who worked at popular LA restaurant Little Prince, as well as Whale Wins, Staple and Fancy, and Damn the Weather in Seattle) worked on the project. for a full year. While the pandemic has certainly had an impact on the timing (not to mention all the issues with the West Seattle Bridge closure), Allyum was able to move forward during the current phase of COVID restrictions. The restaurant is focusing on take-out for now, as dining rooms are closed until at least January 11, but owners are ready to make adjustments in an ever-changing landscape. “We decided to create a hybrid service at the counter where you order before sitting down, while enjoying excellent service at your table,” explains Raël.
When it comes to alcohol, Allyum has a few daily wine options, as well as Bloody Marys and mimosas for brunch, and plans to offer a full list of cocktails, wines, and beers as soon as things are sorted out. Like other restaurants in town, there will also be a retail market, offering snacks and other pantry items. “We will also focus on homemade breads and pasta,” explains Raël. “During the stop, the menu will be simpler and more appropriate for eating in a car on the way back.”
Restaurant hours are Wednesday to Friday from noon to 6 p.m., with brunch on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
