Google searches for ‘vegan food near me’ peak of over 5,000% in 2021

Google searches for “vegan food near me” have seen an increase of over 5,000% in 2021. The search engine Google identified the term as “groundbreaking search” in its recently published “Year in Search” report .

Aside from “vegan food near me,” Google users were looking for other vegan-related topics. As of October, “is climate change caused by humans” and “how eating less meat is helping climate change” has been extensively researched in the UK. In November, global searches for “vino vegano” (vegan wine in Spanish) increased by more than 3,800%. When it came to specific foods, people searched for the word “vegan” in conjunction with pasta, cakes, pancakes, chili, and soup.

This year, as the world continued to fight the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Google identified that users searched for ‘how to heal’ in a variety of ways, both directly by entering the term (which has also seen an increase research record this year). ) and indirectly by researching health promotion topics, including those around planetary health.

Google’s vegan searches on the rise

Google’s annual research report provides insight into what people are most interested in learning, and veganism has been a high priority for several years in a row. A report released last year showed that Google searches for veganism hit an all-time high in 2020. And food isn’t the only query, as 10 million Google searches are performed for non-food vegan articles. such as shoes, cosmetics and handbags. When it comes to the popularity of veganism in parts of the world, the UK, Australia and Israel were in the top three places, with the US in 12th place.

Searches for vegan topics are most popular in January, possibly due to resolutions about improving health through a change in diet and the annual Veganuary campaign, which challenges people around the world to become vegans for the month of january and beyond. In fact, January 2020 searches for “Veganuary” in the countryside’s home country of the UK were roughly equal to those of “Dry January,” a popular tradition of not consuming alcohol at the start of the year.

Overall, Google searches for ‘how to conserve’, ‘climate change impact’ and ‘sustainability’ also hit all-time highs in 2021. This year’s research on veganism in combination with sustainability shows a rise in growing awareness of the impact of animal agriculture on the planet. While research on the subject has been intensifying for some time, this year several major studies have pointed out that an animal-based diet is much more resource-intensive than a plant-based diet, including a study from the University of Leeds published this month in the scientific journal PLOS A who found that meat eaters are responsible for 59% more greenhouse gas emissions than vegetarians.

Since many restaurants were operating with limited capacity in 2021, Google searches for “vegan food near me” likely ended with orders from popular food and grocery delivery platforms such as Instacart. and Grubhub (both of which confirm this trend as they have seen spikes in popularity for vegan foods). On Instacart, around a third of users ordered vegan alternatives to meat and milk in the first quarter of 2021. On Grubhub, plant-based orders have exploded, with the Impossible Cheeseburger dethroning the spicy chicken sandwich as the first. order of 2021.
