Believe it or not, this new vegan meat is made from air

Air Protein is a very unique approach to making meat substitutes. It literally turns air into protein, without the release of methane gas and other harmful effects of agriculture.

Meat alternatives offer a plethora of environmental benefits as a food source without deforestation, factory farming, or carbon emissions. According to their website, Air Protein is an alternative that “eliminates the tradeoff between taste, nutrition, and climate threat.”

To begin with, the innovative approach began with the space program in the 1970s. It was then that scientists began studying the transformation of elements in the air into protein solutions for astronauts on long flights. Dr. Lisa Dyson and Dr. John Reed took over the original research and perfected the technique alongside the Air Protein team.

Although innovative, the process is not entirely new. We know that air components can be transformed into food for a long time. Think of the fermentation process in beer, the yeast in bread, or the process of making yogurt. Using the method developed by the Air Protein team means that ‘meat’ can be produced much faster than with standard meat production. It is a possible solution to food insecurity and an alternative for those seeking to reduce or eliminate meat consumption.

In addition, Air Protein is naturally carbon negative since it uses what already exists in the air. It has a low impact on the planet and produces little to no emissions throughout the process.

What the company calls its “recipe for change” starts with air, water and renewable energy. The cultures and elements in the air then combine into proteins within hours. At this point, the protein is collected, purified and dried into a flour-like substance. Air Protein Flour is then used as an ingredient in a recipe to create the texture and flavor of meats.

Additionally, Air Protein does not contain animals, soy, hormones, pesticides, herbicides or GMOs.

“We have redesigned and are redesigning the way meat can be made – delicious, nutritionally advanced and guilt-free. Air Protein creates the most sustainable meat on the planet. This is the future of meat,” the company said.
