The best new Android apps and games for January 2025
Sane Scrolling
Rein in your rampant short-form video appetite in time for the holidays.
- Price: Free, with in-app purchases
- Developer: IJP
It’s that time of year when one can quickly get drawn into the lives of others on social media, scrolling mindlessly through holiday-themed reels and videos and wasting hours in the process. An app we covered recently, Sane Scrolling, helps mitigate this problem.
Sane Scrolling is a timer and a barrier to short-form social media videos, whether on TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube. The app allows users to set a screen time goal, after which Sane Scrolling shuts down access to their chosen apps. This approach allows those genuinely enamored with this content to wean themselves off it slowly.
The app isn’t perfect, though. It’s laced with ads, making the experience that much more irritating. Additionally, if you want to view the content, you will have to get around the app. Nothing is going to deter people from their vices entirely.
Monument Valley 3
The charming puzzle game series is back on Android and under Netflix Games’ banner.
- Price: Free, requires an active Netflix subscription
- Developer: Netflix Games / Ustwo
For fans of the Monument Valley series, the third installment has plenty of new additions, from experiments with various new mechanics to all-new levels and puzzles. One even involves a boat.
The game doesn’t deviate too much from its roots, which will be frustrating for those seeking a steeper challenge but appeases those who prefer a fresh taste of the established formula.
Notably, the game will expand across 2025, with Netflix and Ustwo planning a steady content rollout. This, in addition to its free availability for those with a Netflix subscription, should make it one to grab sooner rather than later.
Kinnu
Duolingo, but for general knowledge.
- Price: Free
- Developer: Kinnu
Kinnu is by no means a brand-new app, but I’ve become mildly addicted to it recently. I love learning about random things, and this app satisfies that appetite.
It’s divided into core topics, each with various subtopics split into brief lessons that are easy to complete and even easier to remember. For instance, you’ll learn about meteorology, climate, geology, and more by tackling the geography topic. The lessons are great for adults and kids alike.
Globo
A simple geography game that’s great for buffing your country and city smarts.
- Price: Free
- Developer: NaKo Games
Geography was my favorite subject when I was younger, so it’s no wonder I’ve enjoyed fooling around with Globo. This new app turns learning country trivia, cities, and flags into a game that’s a lot like Duolingo and Kinnu. Each region you complete, another unlocks. I’m not entirely sure why the US is first and my region of Southern Africa is second to last. Nevertheless, it would’ve been great if we could pick and choose which region we want to tackle first.
Agr Reader
A beautifully sleek Material-first RSS reader.
- Price: Free, in-app purchases from $1.49-$8.99 per item
- Developer: Lowaen
It’s easy to get Aggregator RSS and Agr Reader confused (I admit, I did), but the latter feels far more polished and familiar with Google’s app aesthetic. It leans heavily on Material You stylings, with tight spacing and plain, pastel colors. The app reader is great and includes full-text parsing, making it a pleasure to enjoy news without the usual ad trimmings.
I wish Agr Reader had a Feedly-like feed list to make it easy to add feeds; however, it does support OPML file imports. But it’s surprisingly feature-packed, with support for multiple RSS services, a host of customizations, and even WebDAV support.
Infinity Nikki
A cute and cozy open-world romp.
- Price: Free / In-app purchases from $0.99-$89.99 per item
- Developer: InFold Pte
Finally, if you’re looking for something that’ll scratch your Genshin Impact itch but also crave something far more cutesy, Infinity Nikki is the ticket. The fifth installment of the franchise, the game is also available on handhelds and consoles. If you don’t have a flagship phone from recent years, you’ll probably want to stick to one of those platforms instead.
It’s a wonderfully cozy game, drawing design inspiration from what feels like a magical Alpine town. Players can also don ability outfits, which you acquire as you traverse the game world. That’s all incredibly charming, but the title’s performance leaves much to be desired. Hopefully, the developers will iron out the issues in the months ahead.
