Set up Google Assistant on your Chromebook

You can set up Google Assistant on most Chromebooks. If your Chromebook is managed by a school or business, Assistant may not be available. Check if your Chromebook is managed.

Turn on Google Assistant

  1. At the bottom right, select the time.
  2. Select Settings .
  3. On the left, select System preferences.
  4. Under “System preferences,” select Google Assistant.
  5. Turn on Google Assistant.
  6. To use the Assistant with your voice, turn on “Hey Google.”

Teach Google Assistant to recognize your voice

Important:

  • "Hey Google" isn't available on school-issued Chromebooks. Learn more about managed Chromebooks.
  • For Family Link users: If the parent declines Voice Match enrollment during device setup, the Voice Match enrollment option in Settings will be grayed out. If the parent wants to turn on Voice Match, they need to reset the device and choose it during Voice Match enrollment.
  1. Make sure you’ve turned on “Hey Google.”
  2. On your Chromebook, select the time.
  3. Select Settings .
  4. On the left, select System preferences.
  5. Under “System preferences,” select Google Assistant.
  6. Under “Hey Google,” next to “Voice match,” select Retrain.
  7. Follow the on-screen steps.

Turn off Google Assistant

  1. At the bottom right, select the time.
  2. Select Settings .
  3. On the left, select System preferences.
  4. Under “System preferences,” select Google Assistant.
  5. Turn off Google Assistant.
