2024 was pivotal for Vimeo and our customers. We made significant product updates across our world-class platform to best serve customers of all sizes. From revolutionary AI functionality that makes videos easier for creators to build–and more engaging for viewers–to product enhancements that make video management and hosting even easier to use, Vimeo is committed to continually innovating and providing the best full-service video platform in the world.

Let's look at some of the most significant updates and how you can learn more about them.

AI

One of the biggest headlines across the industry in 2024 was the convergence of AI and video. It was a breakthrough year, where everything from AI-powered avatars to effortless language translation has made a true impact in the space – allowing businesses to create more video content significantly faster and enabling more meaningful engagement with employees and customers globally.

Vimeo unveiled many AI product enhancements in 2024, focused on making our customers more productive with auto-generated titles, tags, chapters, and video text summaries. And, with auto-generated transcriptions, users can now edit videos with text and even enable the content of an entire video to be searchable.

We also introduced AI functionality that can automatically translate video content in 29 languages in just a few minutes. Whether you're a global company that wants to create deeper engagement with staff or an international marketing team trying to get more content localized, Vimeo is a fantastic way to grow internationally, quickly, and affordably.

We're incredibly excited about these new features and how beneficial they have already been for our customers. As we integrate AI tools into Vimeo, our mission is to protect creative rights and dedicate ourselves to the ethical and transparent use of AI. As our CEO Phillip Moyer noted in a post earlier in the year: "Vimeo will not allow generative AI models to be trained using videos hosted on our platform without your explicit consent, even if you use our free offerings. In addition, we prohibit unauthorized content scraping (by model companies) and continue to implement security protocols designed to protect user-generated content."

Employee engagement and development

When employees are disengaged, they can actively cost their employer money. According to 2023 research from McKinsey, the estimated cost of employee disengagement at a median-size S&P 500 company is $228 million per year. Conversely, when employees are engaged in their work, they can establish a foundation for sustained, long-term business growth.

More and more internal communications teams have recently turned to video solutions such as Vimeo as a powerful way to inform and inspire their employees. This is why we created Vimeo Venues, a virtual events platform designed to increase employee engagement through interactive town halls and fireside chats and boost knowledge retention with dynamic training for new products or services.

In 2024, we continued to refine and enhance the product, significantly improving the overall viewer experience, quality-of-life benefits for hosts, and adding new functionality to make events more interactive. We also made improvements to our core livestream offering, enabling viewers to pause and rewind streams and blur backgrounds, plus enable moderators to reply directly to Q&A and control embedding.

"We now have a larger reach with zero additional cost. Our company engagement and awareness of our strategies have gone up. It's definitely an improvement on our previous methods."
Joel Basa, Paychex's Creative Services Manager

In addition to traditional corporate communications, live streaming and events can also bolster employee engagement through video-based learning and development. In a constantly changing job market, retaining and upskilling employees through video can drive growth and innovation without the higher costs of recruiting and hiring new talent. LinkedIn’s 2024 Workplace Learning Report found that companies with a strong learning culture saw a 57% increase in employee retention. Create, collaborate, and host

Creating and hosting high-quality videos is at the heart of who we are. In 2024 we released a flurry of updates that make creating, editing, reviewing, and sharing videos better than ever before.

Image of Vimeo's timeline editor

Vimeo launched a fully reimagined timeline-based editor that offers premium editing capabilities while still being easy enough for anyone on your team to use. Its intuitive drag-and-drop functionality lets creators easily layer video clips, music, text, and more, giving them complete control over every aspect of their videos.

Significant updates were also made towards optimizing reviews and collaboration. Improved commenting and notification tools, the ability to share time-coded segments or specific video chapters with team members, and tweaks to contributor management settings are just some of the core updates that were released.

And, to ensure everything always looks its best for customers and/or employees watching your content, we introduced new customization options for the Vimeo player, including the ability to toggle on or off specific controls like chapters or casting options like Airplay and Chromecast.

In fact, Vimeo's player is one of the most customizable on the internet, giving you unprecedented control over what your viewers experience, developing trust with them, and creating affinity for your brand. So, whether you’re a cutting-edge manufacturer of electric motorcycles that’s building its brand, or a dog accessories company that elevates its post-purchase customer experience with how-to videos, you can ensure everything looks how you want, where you want with Vimeo.
