✨ This holiday season, donate to Wemos and hang a beautiful ornament in our Wemos Christmas tree! Having access to quality healthcare is essential for all of us. No matter who we are or where we live. But what if you live in a small village in Uganda and the nearest hospital is out of reach? Or what if you live in the Netherlands and discover that the medicine you need is not available? In reality, for many people it is difficult to get the healthcare they need. We believe it is possible to change this! By addressing the root causes of problems, presenting solutions and calling for action, our work improves health systems and the well-being of people worldwide. Together we build a healthier life for all of us. Will you support us? 🎄 Donate to Wemos and hang a beautiful ornament in our Wemos Christmas tree! This way, you support our work on ensuring access to affordable medicines, sufficient financing for health and access to health workers for everyone, everywhere. 💝 Thank you for your support! 👉 Donate here: https://lnkd.in/ejqhVBbd

Over ons
Wemos believes that everyone, everywhere, is entitled to access to health and we are committed to achieving and protecting this, in the Netherlands. and in low- and middle-income countries. In our mission, we focus on three core programmes: human resources for health, finance for health, and access to medicines. In each of these three, we base ourselves on evidence derived from close collaboration with research institutes, networks and partner organizations worldwide. Human resources for health Worldwide, health workers are unevenly distributed. We advocate sustainable and fair health worker policy. Finance for health The international community can and should contribute to the strengthening of countries’ health budgets. We call for strengthening the pool of public resources for health. Aid for Trade Development assistance in healthcare in low- and middle-income countries should serve public health goals, but this is not always the case. We aim to address the impact of projects involving private for-profit companies in the health sector. Access to medicines Medicines should be accessible for everyone, everywhere in the world. We focus on fair pricing of medicines, the development of medicines that address unmet medical needs, responsible licensing and we advocate conditions for public investments in new medicines. For almost 40 years we have been advocating health for all by analyzing global policy and by addressing governments. Visit our website for more information: www.wemos.org

Debt cancellation is a viable solution to free Mozambique from its vicious debt cycle, enabling investments in healthcare, education and sustainable development. Our new brief, co-authored with N'weti, makes a strong case for debt cancellation for #Mozambique. With debt exceeding half of its GDP, debt cancellation would unlock important resources to fund essential services and infrastructure, fostering a healthier and more equitable future for Mozambicans. We call on creditors, multilateral organizations and development partners to act decisively and support #debtcancellation in the country. 💊 🏭 🌍 High-income countries should invest in regional production of medicines that is not only in Africa, but also for and by Africa. Wemos director Mariëlle Bemelmans and Afya na Haki director Mulumba Moses advocate this in a joint opinion article for the online bulletin Think Global Health. If Africa is enabled to produce medical products itself, countries there can respond better and faster to diseases and viruses, such as mpox. High-income countries currently invest in regional production in Africa, but mainly pharmaceutical companies from the Global North seem to benefit from this. That can and must be done differently. Funders of initiatives for regional production should focus on creating local ownership. They can do this by investing in medicine development and production by local manufacturers and by ensuring transfer of technologies and know-how to these companies. "A sustainable pharmaceutical industry in Africa that is needs-driven and independent from priorities and profit motives in the Global North, requires regional production by local and regional manufacturers." 'Health: it's on the government!' That's this year's theme for Universal Health Coverage Day, on 12 December. What can or should governments do to ensure that everyone has access to quality healthcare, and why? Mariska Meurs, global health advocate at Wemos, gives answers and walks us through the government's responsibility in achieving universal health coverage. She explains the main challenges and outlines key steps governments can take to fulfil this fundamental human need. We've joined forces with partners to urge the IFC - International Finance Corporation to conduct a transparent and inclusive review of its Sustainability Framework. The IFC will review its Sustainability Framework in the next couple of years. This framework is a key instrument in ensuring that IFC projects are sustainable and do not harm local communities or the environment. ▶️ When it comes to health, it could guarantee that health projects funded by the IFC are accessible, affordable and of sufficient quality. 🤝 To strengthen this process, we co-signed a letter with partners worldwide, laying out important recommendations for an inclusive framework review process. It's essential that the IFC conducts this review transparently, involving civil society and local communities to listen to their needs, complaints and wishes.
