🇵🇪 🌴Smallholder oil palm farmers achieve a significant milestone in Peru. APROMAN, an association of oil palm producers, has become the first group of independent smallholders in Peru to achieve eligibility for Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification. This achievement demonstrates the potential that sustainable palm oil production holds for smallholders. The Sustainable Palm Program, a partnership between the producers and Alicorp, Solidaridad Latinoamérica, and NES NATURALEZA, provided farmers with training, access to digital tools, and support to improve their practices and meet the highest environmental and social standards. "The joint effort among organizations, producers, and companies in this supply chain is proving that sustainability in palm oil production is achievable and beneficial for everyone," said Lesly Vera Gonzales Vera, Palm Programme Manager at Solidaridad in Peru. Solidaridad's Senior EU Policy Advisor weighs in on the +/- of a year long delay for the European Deforestation Regulation: "... there is really no time to relax. The real challenge of the EUDR is about to begin: how to make it deliver on its promise, and how to do so positively for the communities at the heart of its implementation: smallholder producers across the world." 🇬🇭 Going green in Ghana: A transformative shift in palm oil processing🌴 Read it here https://lnkd.in/gnjc33iv Ghana's small-scale palm oil centres, which process 80% of the country's oil palm fruit bunches, are beginning to adopt technology that can dramatically reduce emissions & boost efficiency. In the past, these processors have relied on outdated processing methods that take a heavy toll on the environment. A new initiative, implemented by Solidaridad West Africa and supported by the KliK Foundation, utilizes biogas systems treat mill effluent and repurpose the resulting methane and waste for energy use and fertilizer. Replacing harmful fuel stock, like firewood and tires, with biomass boilers further reduces emissions and improves air quality. This modernization effort not only addresses environmental challenges, but creates significant community benefit: Improved working conditions enhance health and safety, while increased oil extraction rates drive economic growth in local communities.
