How is energy efficiency achieved in buildings? 💡 Energy efficiency measures are considered the “lowest hanging fruit” for return on investment in buildings. Energy efficient buildings could reduce global energy demand by 12% - that’s absolutely huge! (reference - World Economic Forum Transforming Energy Demand Report)- https://lnkd.in/eU6VR867 How is energy efficiency achieved in buildings? The design of the building itself, e.g., natural light, insulation, natural ventilation 💻 Technologies, e.g., advanced HVAC systems, heat pumps, LED lighting, energy generating systems like solar panels, AI, building automation 🎛️ Smart Control of energy use in the building, e.g., of HVAC and lighting systems 👤 User behavior, e.g., how occupants of the building use (or don’t use) energy. This can be influenced by design and smart controls as well. Energy efficiency measures can result in anywhere from 30%-60% savings on energy costs in buildings. This has mostly been calculated based on savings associated with technology implementation or retrofitting and design aspects including insulation. Rarely are the benefits of smart controls or user behavior considered in return on investment calculations, never mind how all of these aspects of energy efficiency work together. So consider that the cost savings of energy efficiency as calculated to-date has overshadowed the opportunity for true calculation of the ROI of smart and sustainable buildings. Is the real estate industry sleepwalking into obsolescence? 🤯 "The real estate industry completely failed to understand how technology was going to impact the demand for offices..." An opening quotation from my conversation with Gavin Cotterill at Digital Built Australia. Prepare for job unbundling and rebundling: "Jobs are going to become unbundled and rebundled. Break things up into tasks, unbundle some of those, automate those and then rebundle what my job is." A poinsettia only gets it’s beautiful red color if it spends at least 12 hours in the dark. As a northern girl who has spent many winter days in 12+ hours of dark I can confidently say I am not better in the dark. I have less energy crave more sleep and inside activities. Some research has even compared these tendencies in people to a form of hybernation. So while I may act like a bear each winter I am inspired by the poinsettia. What can we become in the dark?
