His unique character and values make him a deserving winner." About three weeks ago, I heard the above quote on my phone while sitting on a delayed plane in Madrid waiting to go home. I was following the Funda ceremony and the IHAB award announcement via video call as I was unable to attend in person because I got to visit Madrid on a business trip as part of my new role at Odyssey Hotel Group. The IHAB (International Hospitality Advisory Board) award is given to the student who impresses the most during their final assessment of the Hotel Management School Maastricht. I was incredibly honoured to get nominated and did not expect to win. That made this moment all the more special, also because the award was awarded to two people this time! Both Valentina J. S. Wießmeier, who is a very deserving co-winner, and I won the IHAB award. Closing out my HMSM chapter like this fills me with joy and makes me able to look back at an incredible 4 years that made me grow both professionally and as a person. I have met many knowledgeable people from the hospitality industry, learned all kinds of things hotel and hospitality-related and was able to learn about and experience the ins and outs of the industry. All in all a truly deserving finale to my time in Maastricht. Another surprise then came during one of my meetings at work where my colleagues made sure to present a gift to me in celebration of winning the award. Exceeding expectations like true hoteliers! On this note, I want to thank all the people that I had the pleasure of meeting and learning from during my time at HMSM. Specifically, Luc Houben, who introduced me to and supported me during my time at the Excellence Programme without which I would be missing a lot of crucial skills that helped me to graduate in the exact fashion I did, Luc Partouns, who supervised me throughout my first internship and my minor, and Rick Cuijpers who guided me through my last year at the Hotelschool during my graduation project and final internship. Also thanks to Tobias Van Dijk who was my company mentor at Odyssey during my internship and helped me brainstorm for my final assessment which ultimately led to winning the award. Lastly, thanks to Jules van Gaalen for seeing my potential during the internship and offering me to join his team at Odyssey in one of the most interesting and diverse jobs in the hospitality world I can think of! I am beyond excited for what my future holds here and am looking very much forward to continuing my journey here. Finally and most importantly, I want to thank Vanshika Dewan for being my everlasting support throughout these past years without which I would not be where I am today.
