Over ons
The Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM) is an interdisciplinary research institute in chemistry and physics at the Radboud University. Our mission is to perform fundamental research to understand, design and control the functioning of molecules and materials. Research at IMM is focused on three closely connected themes, supported by the unique research facilities. Theme 1: Structure and Dynamics of Molecules Theme 2: Chemistry of Complex Systems Theme 3: Spectroscopy of Quantum Materials The IMM houses a multitude of advanced spectroscopic tools that allow for a detailed characterisation of matter in the nano-femto-domain, including the world-wide unique coupling of the free electron lasers laboratory FELIX to the high magnetic field laboratory (HFML) enabling far infrared experiments in high magnetic fields.

A consortium including Evan Spruijt from the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM) of Radboud University, has been awarded an NWO ENW-XL Open Competition Grant for the project 'Approaching De-Novo Life'. This project aims to create, for the first time, a minimal form of life from synthetic molecules, addressing fundamental questions such as What is life and how did it begin? Congratulations Evan and the team! https://lnkd.in/dtiUG8sB

Evan Spruijt has received an ERC Grant for his project PhaseShape. The ERC Consolidator Grant is designed to support researchers at the stage in which they aim to set up their own independent research team and research programme. Membranes are crucial for the functioning of living cells. They enclose and protect the cell and organize the cellular machinery in subcompartments. Membrane proteins regulate the transport of molecules entering and exiting the cell, which is essential to maintain homeostasis and produce the energy required for life. Spruijt’s project aims to develop coacervate protocells with dynamically controlled properties that are capable of similar functional interactions in synthetic cells. Congratulations Evan! https://lnkd.in/dxg7Urh7

A team including researchers from the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM) of Radboud University demonstrated the potential of Brownian reservoir computing technology for gesture recognition. Their findings, published in Nature Communications, show that this approach consumes significantly less energy while achieving performance equal or better than conventional techniques. Highligted in https://lnkd.in/eTaitiFJ Congrats to the team! Congrats Johan Mentink and Thomas Brian Winkler from IMM #sustaintabledataprocessing #skyrmions #science https://lnkd.in/dvJS_KXy

Who is going win the Nijmegen Impact Award 2024 ? ☀ Last year TropIQ was proudly nominated as finalist for the Nijmegen Impact Award 2023. Each year our municipality, Gemeente Nijmegen, nominates a few companies that strive for a positive impact on society. Although we did not win the Impact Award in the end, we were honoured to be nominated as impactful company amongst the other nominees (Coöperatie ARBRES, ECO+BOUW Stichting TriUnity, and YouBeDo) that fight for a more sustainable, social, healthier, and equal society! 🍀 🙏 Want to know more about what we do at TropIQ? 🦟 Watch this video which was made in light of our Impact Award nomination last year. https://lnkd.in/ezW-ev4j TropIQ is excited to see who will be the winner of this years Nijmegen Impact Award! Until then you can find TropIQ on the posters around Nijmegen! 😉

Jolijn Onvlee, researcher in the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM) of Radboud University, has been awarded an ERC Starting Grant to study cold and controlled reactive molecular collisions. I’m very excited about this grant, which will allow me and my group to advance our highly-controlled reactive collision experiments. In this project, we aim to not only get a detailed understanding of fundamental chemical reactions and their underlying (stereo)dynamics, but to even control their outcomes(…). Congratulations Jolijn! 🥳 https://lnkd.in/d8dCs3um

Bas van de Meerakker, Professor in Spectroscopy of Cold Molecules within the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM) at Radboud University has received an NWO Open Competition Domain Science-M Grant for developing new methods to study molecules at extremely low temperatures. Molecular scattering is a fundamental aspect of chemistry, and understanding it in greater detail opens up new possibilities for manipulating reaction outcomes. At ultracold temperatures, below 1 Kelvin, molecular interactions are governed by quantum mechanics, presenting unique opportunities to control and study these processes. Systems with electric dipole-dipole interactions are particularly intriguing because they allow manipulation of collisions using external electromagnetic fields. Congratulations! https://lnkd.in/dpYkdz2h
