Good news🎉Researchers from our faculty have been awarded two NWO (Dutch Research Council) grants of 6.7 million euros. These are grants within the Research on Routes by Consortia (ORC) program of the Dutch Research Agenda (Nederlandse Wetenschapsagenda, NWA). Professor Han Olff is coordinator of a project that will develop a new approach to global biodiversity restoration in areas of where livestock farming is an important form of land use. Researchers from various institutes of the Faculty of Science and Engineering are partners in a consortium led by Professor Inge Loes ten Kate (UU, UvA), which will conduct research into the origin of life on earth and in the universe.🌍 Here you can read more about the research projects 👇 https://lnkd.in/eQ-5Y7EP #fsegroningen #universityofgroningen #NWO #NWA #biodiversity #originsoflife University of Groningen

Just announced 📢 together with Prof. Schwille Petra (Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry), Prof. Bert Poolman will receive a EUR five million Synergy Grant for synthetic cell research from the European Research Council (ERC). Poolman is the coordinator of the six-year project. Poolman and Schwille will explore how the features of life - compartmentalization, metabolism, cell division and genome segregation - are mechanistically linked and enable autonomous growth of cells. In addition to major technical advances in building cells, the research will contribute to a better understanding of biological mechanisms, which are often hidden in living cells because of their enormous molecular complexity. And it will provide new fundamental insights into some of the key principles underlying cellular life, which should ultimately lead to a blueprint for life. We are happy to announce that Prof. Davide Grossi has been awarded a Horizon Europe grant of EUR 3.3 million for improving online participation platforms👏 This involves open source software that can be used at multiple levels of government: from local to national and transnational. Grossi is collaborating with an international and interdisciplinary consortium of academic and societal partners. The three-year project will start January 1. With their interdisciplinary approach, the consortium integrates methods and concepts from democratic theory, social science and computer science. Grossi underlines the importance of this: ‘Democracy is complex. It is what enables societies like ours, consisting of millions of individuals, to make collective decisions and govern themselves. There is no single academic discipline that can tame this complexity alone.' Read more 👇 https://lnkd.in/gBfAnPAq #fsegroningen #universityofgroningen #HorizonEurope #democracy #technology
