What's the fuss about Fluss? will analytical and streaming worlds really unify? I have a foot each in the big data and streaming worlds, and the uncomfortable truth is that combining them can be a challenge and one of the immutable areas of complexity is the storage used. Streaming technologies such as Kafka usually rely on log-based formats that don't suit analytical use cases, and the data needs to be moved away from the streaming systems into columnar-based formats that do. So one of the must-see sessions at Flink Forward for me in Berlin last month was the deep dive into Fluss, following its announcement. see https://lnkd.in/e358UJPq for more. Fluss aims to provide that unification, allowing conventional data and streaming workloads to run on a single service, incorporating a "columner stream" and providing a "streamhouse" capability. I'm a fan of Apache Arrow (in-memory columnar format) so happy to see it as part of the Fluss architecture, but under the hood the need to make use of tiered storage and open table formats for long-term storage hint at how Fluss leans more into the analytical workloads. It's one to follow, and when successful, I do think for a lot of use cases Fluss will give us the bridge to a real-time lakehouse capability. True Kappa architecture 10 years later, anyone??
