  • There are ways that we can help make Christmas the most wonderful time of the year for both us and the planet.🎅 Here are some ideas on how to reduce your emissions by buying fewer items over the festive period: 🎄 Avoid buying new decorations every year. Save money by reusing or upcycling existing ones or make your own using things from around the house or from outdoors, like pinecones and ivy. 🎄Instead of buying a new outfit for a Christmas party, have a rummage through your wardrobe and restyle something you already have. 🎄This year try making gifts through upcycling. Your friends and family will be able to tell that a lot of thought, creativity, and love has gone into their gifts. 🎄If you need to wrap something up, try learning a tape-free technique such as furoshiki, a traditional Japanese method of using cloth to wrap gifts. It’s unique and your gift will look extra special under the tree. 🎄Shop for your Christmas food near to where you live and you’ll reduce your emissions as well as helping your local economy. Save the food you don’t eat on the day – we all know how delicious leftovers can be. Let us know how you’ll be making your Christmas more sustainable in the comments below.👇 📸VisitScotland / Kenny Lam #Christmas #LetsDoNetZero

  • Despite the shorter days and longer nights, Scotland’s wildlife is just as breathtaking in the winter months. Scotland has lost 15% of its wildlife since 1994, but there are things we can continue to do to take care of nature. These include volunteering our time for improving where nature lives, providing water, especially when everything is frozen, and feeding the local wildlife to get them through the long winter months. • Acting Climate Action Minister Alasdair Allan has responded to the UK Government's publication of its 'Clean Power 2030 Action Plan'. Dr Allan said: “Scotland’s significant renewable potential, strong pipeline of projects, and growing supply chain will be vital to achieving a secure, affordable and clean power system. “So it is crucial that the UK Government’s work to support clean power and any electricity system reforms respects devolved powers, ambitions and policies, and ensures investor and industry confidence. “It is also critical that the UK Government supports delivery of clean power in a way that provides a clear legacy and defined benefits for consumers and communities across the country – supporting the Scottish Government’s commitment to ensure a fair and just transition to net zero. Energy consumers – both in Scotland and elsewhere – must benefit from the lower costs of renewable electricity and there must be protections in place for the most vulnerable, including those living in or at risk of fuel poverty. “We will continue working closely with the UK Government to ensure Scotland’s interests are fully considered with regards to this plan.”

  • The world generates a staggering 50 million tonnes of electronic waste annually. Electronics underpin every part of society, industry and business. Which in turn creates a lot of electronic waste that is damaging to the planet. To tackle this, universities and organisations across Scotland are collaborating to create the UK’s first sustainable electronics centre named REACT. The centre is looking to develop methods to recycle electronic waste effectively and efficiently. As well as reducing how much energy our ICT equipment uses. They will also be working with local industry in Scotland to improve skills and provide demonstrations, making it easier for businesses to also recycle their electronic waste. The project will be led by the University of Glasgow in collaboration with The University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University, and the Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult Scotland. Round of applause for innovative collaboration like this! 👏 #ElectronicWaste #LetsDoNetZero

Not only will this help you save cash but it will also help the planet too – a win win! The Zero Waste Scotland course is compiled of five easy to navigate sections. Once you complete the bite-size course, you will receive a meal planner and top tips designed to help you put your new knowledge into action. • The National Energy System Operator (NESO) is consulting on a draft methodology for the Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP). As co-commissioners of the SSEP, the Scottish Government welcomes the consultation and encourages everyone with an interest to respond. Key to the plan’s success will be ensuring that developer and investor confidence is maintained throughout. More: https://ow.ly/soGr50UnzP1
