How do you differentiate yourself in a crowded asset management market? Daniel McKernan, Global Head of Fixed Income Insurance Solutions, and Matthew Smith, Head of Insurance Clients, abrdn, discuss what asset managers can offer clients to stand out from the crowd. "Insurance companies regularly have an investment income hurdle that they need to beat," said McKernan. "They also tend to have an average credit quality for their portfolio of A- or better, with large holdings of public investment grade and government bonds." Abrdn was recently awarded Insurance Asset Manager of the Year at the Insurance Investor | European Awards 2024 and the pair also give their thoughts on wider industry trends and forecasts. "I often have to remind myself that investing in private credit isn’t a new phenomenon for insurers," said Smith. Last Thursday, I had the privilege of speaking on the Insurance Investor panel alongside Ruth Farrugia (CIO of Resolution Life), Mike Huff (CIO of PartnerRe), John Bradley (VP-CIO of F&G), and Anna Dreyer, Ph.D., CFA (Portfolio Manager of T. Rowe Price). It was an incredible opportunity to exchange ideas with industry leaders about building optimal portfolio and aligning ALM strategies with today's dynamic insurance landscape. Key topics we explored included: 1. The foundational building blocks of a successful strategic portfolio. 2. Strategies to find yield in a constrained credit spread environment. 3. Approaches to managing reinvestment risks effectively. 4. Ensuring sufficient diversification to enhance portfolio resilience. A big thank you to Insurance Investor and my fellow panelists for making this session so engaging and insightful. The world is in a state of flux, said Zurich Insurance in its “Global Economic and Markets Outlook 2025” report. “The global economic landscape is undergoing significant changes, with diverging growth trajectories and persistent inflationary pressures,” said Stephan van Vliet, Group Chief Investment Officer. “As 2024 draws to a close, the future is uncertain,” said Guy Miller, Group Chief Market Strategist and Economist, and author of the report.
