CEO of The Experiential Learning Group (PCA, PCA Law, LGLD and Youd Andrews) - a passion for Human-centred Leadership and a mission to use Human-centred Experiential Learning to help individuals and organisations grow.

So, the penultimate in my top 10 list of mistakes that I see in learning design, goes right to the heart of my passion for all things experiential… MISTAKE #9 – TOO MUCH WHAT, NOT ENOUGH HOW This mistake is very closely connected to the first three I included on my list, which were about having too much content, too many learning outcomes and over-design. Time and again learning designs are packed with too much ‘what’ – i.e. models, tools, theory, concepts, tips…ultimately lots and lots of data. And usually at the expense of the ‘how’ – i.e. turning all of that into practice. When we learn to ride a bike, we don’t sit around discussing the bike. We don’t study the science behind its mechanics or the concept of balance. We don’t read the bike’s manual from cover to cover. We get on it and we give it a go. Usually we fall off (hence, early on, the use of stabilisers). And then we get back on and give it another go. Practice makes perfect. We learn through experience. Far better to include much less ‘what’ (and I would usually suggest no more than 3 ‘big ideas’ in any one learning design) - and then devote more time for learners to work out how to apply it to their day to day work. Far better to give learners the chance to have a go at putting it into practice (and a psychologically safe training room should give them those stabilisers and help them to get back on when they fall off). Far better to focus on the ‘how’. You have to be brave and take a less is more approach to your content. Trust the experiential learning process. And focus your learners at turning theory into practice. They, and the business, will thank you for it as they ride off into the sunset on their new shiny bike… #learninganddevelopment #training #instructionaldesign #lessismore #learningdesign #experientiallearning #executiveeducation #programdesign #clientfeedback #coursedesign #coursecreation PCA Youd Andrews
