Blog Post: UWE Bristol Distinguished Address Series: Wednesday 2nd October 2024 The ABC of Dr Guy Bailey OBE: Activism, Bus Boycott and Community Learning: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Dr Guy Bailey Last week UWE Bristol as part of the Bristol Distinguished Address Series, celebrated the remarkable life and achievements of Dr Guy Bailey. The evening was a tribute to Dr Bailey and proved a powerful demonstration of the value of community engagement in academia. Dr. Bailey's story is one of courage and determination. As a young man arriving in Bristol from Jamaica in 1961, he faced the harsh realities of racial discrimination. However, Dr. Bailey didn't back down. He played a key role in the 1963 historic Bristol Bus Boycott, a pivotal moment in the fight for racial equality in Britain. His commitment to his community extended beyond the boycott. Following his university degree at UWE, Dr Bailey, with his UWE tutor's encouragement, established the United Housing Association (now Brighter Places). This provided affordable housing for Black elders and he has also worked tirelessly to support young people. The event was hosted by Dr Roger Griffith with an opening address by Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Steve West. A panel discussion featuring UWE Bristol staff, Amy Saleh, Malcolm Richards and Professor Shaun Sobers explored how life-long learning in academia can empower communities. Inspirational short-films created by former UWE Bristol students as part of the UWE Windrush Generations Project were screened. Current Student Union Presidents Lubyna Gardezi and Kolawole Olure discussed their educational journey as International students with Xavier Baker who has been student, staff member and engaged on community projects. Julz Davis CEO of Curiosity UnLtd talked about the legacy of the Bristol Bus Boycott and his activism to engage young people demonstrated in the We Rise music video supported by Aspiration Creation Elevation CIC in St Pauls, Bristol. The evening concluded with Professor Emmanuel Adukwu on the Celebrating Excellence project, who introduced Miles Chambers to pay poetic tribute to Dr Bailey's legacy. Dr. Guy Bailey's story is one of unwavering commitment to his community and a thirst for knowledge. The event served as a powerful reminder that education and activism can go hand-in-hand, and that learning is a lifelong journey. Roger also highlighted the ongoing need to support community organisations such as the Caribbean Elders Lunch Clubs and announced a fundraising appeal for Bristol's Caribbean pioneers. Tributes were given to former UWE tutors Dr Madge Dresser and Dr Marie-Annick Gournet for their work engaging communities in academia. This event was more than just a celebration – it was a call to action, in education and the wider communities to help build a future that is inclusive and just for all.
