Swiss watchmakers had to swallow a 33% rise in the price of gold in 2024, and Rolex is passing on some of that cost increase to its customers. Amongst wallet-aching price tags, a Rolex Daytona ref. 126509 in 18K white gold will now set you back £44,200 - a 14.2% rise from £38,700 last year. Steel sports watches, most of which continue to sell for over retail prices on the secondary market, were spared significant price rises, perhaps reflecting the impact of economic headwinds and inflation on Rolex’s core market of aspirational business owners and the well-healed professional class. Rolex has not commented on the price rises, but the brand is thought to be among the big winners of 2024 as sales have remained strong and waiting lists have barely shortened in the UK, the rest of Europe and the Americas.
