📣 The latest UK-EU Divergence Tracker has landed! 🚨 It finds that Labour is leading the UK towards closer regulatory alignment with the EU in what "amounts to a step-change in UK policy". ◀️▶️ The pursuit of active divergence (where the UK moves away from the EU rulebook) has all but dried up. ⏯️ Instead, the government has hit pause on five pieces of divergence planned by the Conservatives, and has laid the groundwork for active alignment with EU rules in two cases. 📝 The centrepiece of this new alignment agenda is the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill, which starts its committee stage in the House of Lords this week. ♻️ It would allow the government to mirror a wide range of EU regulations, related to the environmental impacts of products, in UK law. 1️⃣2️⃣ The tracker also finds twelve cases of ‘passive’ divergence (where the EU changes its rules and the UK does not follow), as the EU continues to regulate very actively on product and environmental standards. ❓ This raises the question of how frequently Labour will use its new powers to align.
