UCL-supported startup ZNotes was recognised as the best EdTech solution globally at the QS Reimagine Education 2024 awards. UCL alumnus Zubair Junjunia received the award, sponsored by Amazon Web Services (AWS), in recognition for his startup’s work to address educational inequalities. His tech and social impact business, ZNotes, which he scaled during the second year of his master’s in mathematics at UCL, has now evolved into a global force. The business has grown into an online platform that now impacts over six million students with its free educational resources. ZNotes was part of the Hatchery incubator at BaseKX, UCL’s dedicated entrepreneurship hub, managed by UCL Innovation & Enterprise. Here Zubair received equity free office space, was matched with mentors and received tailored business support to grow his startup. Congratulations to UCL-supported startup Yotewo on closing the pre-seed funding round of £250,000 with London-based VC Symvan Capital! 👏 The startup, founded by UCL MSc Entrepreneurship alumni Aliaksandr K. and Altynay Ashimbayeva, is revolutionising tech recruitment with its AI-powered staffing platform. By streamlining talent sourcing, skills screening, contracting and feedback, Yotewo eliminates inefficiencies, reduces human bias and enhances decision-making for companies seeking developer resources. Aliaksandr said: “The Hatchery programme has not only provided us with support, expertise and working space, but also helped with networking. This investment underscores the growing demand for innovative solutions in tech hiring and will enable Yotewo to scale its platform, enhance automation features, and build vital partnerships.” Find out more about the UCL Hatchery incubator programme: https://bit.ly/3CvkVa6 #Entrepreneurship #StudentStartups #Innovation #Investment UCL UCL Alumni Relations UCL Careers UCL School of Management UCL Engineering

Last week, cabinet office minister Pat McFadden outlined the next phase of the Government’s reform of the civil service in a speech at our UCL East campus. The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster chose the iconic Marshgate building as the setting for the event, organised by the UCL Policy Lab, which aimed to elaborate on the Prime Minister’s ‘Plan for Change’ speech last week. In front of a packed audience of journalists and stakeholders, the senior minister explained how the Government wanted to enlist the help of innovators and disruptive thinkers – the type of creative thinking embodied by the start-up sector – to help transform the civil service. UCL is one of the country’s leading universities in the field of innovation and enterprise – there has been £3.2 billion of external investment in UCL start-ups and spinouts since 2018. Mr McFadden referred to a £100 million innovation fund announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in her budget and said ministers will try to recruit start-up workers in the technology industry on six to 12-month “tours of duty” to help deliver Sir Keir’s plan. He said the state needed to become more like a start-up and for the civil service to adopt a different mindset.
