BHP, the world’s biggest miner, and Canada’s Lundin have agreed to acquire South American copper miner Filo in a $3bn deal, in the latest sign of consolidation in the global mining sector. BHP has been on the hunt for copper assets after it walked away from a £39bn offer for Anglo American in May. That takeover attempt was primarily driven by the Australian company’s desire to acquire the London-listed miner’s copper assets in South America as the metal’s price boomed.

Vale SA plans to spend as much as $3.3 billion on improvements at its mining operations in Brazil and Canada to boost copper and nickel production capacity over the next four years. The Brazilian mining giant sees the potential to expand production capacity to about 500,000 tons of copper by 2028 mainly through improvements to its Salobo and Sossego mines in Brazil, Vale said in its latest estimates for its base metals unit. Vale produced 321,000 tons of the wiring metal last year. Nickel also gets a capacity lift. https://lnkd.in/dUpnd4BV

LONDON, June 13 (Reuters) - China's imports of zinc concentrates fell sharply over the first four months of this year in response to a tightening raw materials market. Spot treatment terms for imported mine concentrates are currently trading at levels that are uneconomic for many Chinese smelters, forcing them to rely more on domestic mine supply. https://lnkd.in/gMvnpYjh

The boom times are back for base metals traders. Over 17 million contracts traded on the London Metal Exchange (LME) in April, making it an all-time record month in outright volume terms. Expressed in average daily volumes, activity was the second highest on record after April 2018. https://lnkd.in/d-C5rEZP

Anglo American has rejected BHP’s unsolicited £31bn offer to buy and break up the UK-listed miner, saying the proposal “significantly undervalues” the company and would be “highly unattractive” to its shareholders.

The Biden-Harris administration has awarded $500 million to Century Aluminum (CENX.O), towards the construction of a new "green" low-carbon smelter. Fund managers have rushed to buy copper after the price broke up out of its one-year trading range earlier this month. Activity has surged on all three global exchanges with money managers lifting bullish bets on both the London Metal Exchange (LME) and the CME (CME.O), copper contracts. Market open interest on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (ShFE) has jumped to life-of-contract highs. https://lnkd.in/dRtX27zY
