About us
Transport & Environment (T&E) UK is the UK National Office of Europe’s leading advocates for clean transport and energy. Our mission is to fight for an affordable zero-emission transport system that benefits both people and the planet. Since our formation in 1990, we’ve shaped some of Europe’s most important climate and environmental laws. The UK Office was instrumental in the creation of the zero emissions vehicle mandate - the single biggest carbon-cutting policy the UK has implemented.

Only 10 airlines have serious plans to transition to green fuels, while oil companies are not investing nearly enough in the transition to green kerosene. A new ranking of airlines SAF plans done by T&E shows that 87% of airlines are failing in the transition to sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The top three airlines in the ranking are Air France-KLM, United Airlines and Norwegian, which received high points for committing to e-kerosene or advanced and waste biofuels. IAG Group - which owns British Airways - comes fourth in the ranking. The airline group has pledged to use 10% SAF by 2030 - although they do not have a specific target for e-kerosene. However, they did recently sign purchase agreements with e-SAF providers Infinium and Twelve to help meet the government’s 2028 target for e-fuels. Meanwhile, Virgin Atlantic and Ryanair both rank in the D category (with 5 and 8 points respectively). To ensure the take-off of SAFs in the UK, it needs to prioritise the uptake of e-fuels for planes in its SAF certainty mechanism. Read the report ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dhHMb3cZ

Contrary to the scaremongering in recent weeks, the ZEV mandate is working. A quarter of all cars sold in November were fully electric - this is a record and represents a 51% increase in EV sales compared to last year. Any weakening of the ZEV mandate would unravel this progress, and jeopardise the UK's climate goals and ability to retain and attract vital EV investment. Read more about how the mandate is helping the UK pull ahead of the rest of Europe on EV sales, bringing down prices and providing a clear pathway for industry ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e49WzHJm

Weakening the ZEV mandate would hurt the UK automotive industry AND consumers. 🇬🇧Britain's car industry risks falling further behind in the global transition to EVs. Any watering down of the law which pushes the sector to electrify would diminish its ability to compete internationally. 📉It risks putting more UK jobs in jeopardy as global car markets transition to EVs. 💷Weakening the mandate would also delay the arrival of small, affordable EV models on the market. The Secretary of State Jonathan Reynolds MP must prioritise a coherent industrial strategy that supports UK EV manufacturing, driving investment, growth, and job security in the sector. The Government should also focus on demand-side measures to boost EV sales rather than weakening key climate regulations. Read the briefing: https://lnkd.in/e49WzHJm

Today 50 climate and aviation scientists from across the globe are calling on the aviation industry to take action on contrails. Addressing contrails from planes is a no-regrets decision that will help slow climate change – but the time to act is now. As aviation traffic continues to balloon, non-CO2 effects of aviation are warming the planet at alarming speed. The climate impact of these effects like nitrogen oxide and contrails have been known for more than 25 years, but little effort has been made to mitigate these warming effects. The aviation industry has a real opportunity to reduce its climate impact by addressing contrails. We can’t afford to delay action. The ambition of the ZEV mandate must be upheld, 14 NGOs, think tanks and campaign groups have told the Government. In a letter today, the groups call for no backtracking on the regulation, which is one of the UK’s single biggest carbon saving measures. The law has boosted the EV supply in the UK ahead of Europe and helped bring down prices for consumers. But the current uncertainty over the future of the mandate is putting investments at risk, particularly in the charging sector, they say. The current flexibilities provided to the car industry are enough. The Government should instead pursue targeted policies to boost public confidence and demand for EVs, the groups write. Just like we pay for the delivery costs when we order something online, environmental costs from shipping and aviation should be taken into account when countries do their climate accounting. Unfortunately, the UK hasn't done this with the latest climate plan (known as an NDC) that its submitted to the UN's climate body, the UNFCCC. This is a big missed opportunity. Global shipping and aviation pollution is back to all time highs after Covid. So it's high time countries get serious about cleaning up international transport. https://lnkd.in/eAd8s-Pd Isabela Keuschnigg Opportunity Green Jonathan Hood Daniel Lubin Climate Change Committee #COP29 #UKNDC #Shipping #Aviation
COP29: The UK is among the first handful of countries to introduce the top-line target for its Nationally Determined Contribution, an emissions reduction of 81% compared to 1990 levels. But, the target does not include international aviation and shipping emissions. Writing in Sustainable Views today Jacob Armstrong (he/him), shipping policy manager at Transport & Environment (T&E) and Isabela Keuschnigg, legal officer at Opportunity Green, argue that these emissions should have been included in the NDC. "The UK has missed an opportunity to get ahead of the curb and assume responsibility for international heavily polluting ships and planes" as legal obligations ramp up, they say. Those white trails you sometimes see coming from #planes are called #contrails. And they are having a net #warming effect on the #planet. Just 3% of the flights generate 80% of this warming and a new #study by Transport & Environment (T&E) has found that we could cut #aviation contrails in half by #2040 with one simple and cheap fix - slightly tweaking the #flight plans of just a few #flights. And while rerouting those flights would result in an extra #fuel #burn of around 5%, we could 80% of the contrail warming which would mean there would be significant #climate benefits. In fact the impact would be 15 to 40 times larger than the climate impact from the extra fuel burned. And the best part? This simple climate #action is remarkably cheap. Rerouting these flights to avoid contrail warming would cost as little as £3.24 per ticket. The perfect way to test it would be routes between the #UK and #US - the government should take action!
