Translation and social media: Where creativity meets cultural context Social media shapes our communication, introducing new words and phrases like rizz, reels, fit check, and no cap. At THG Fluently, part of THG Ingenuity, we discussed with our linguists the challenges of translating these evolving terms. 🌏 Creative Decisions English words are often borrowed into casual speech, especially among younger generations. For example, our Arabic linguist Sherifa Noaman noted that while 'post' translates to منشور, terms like reels remain untranslated due to common usage. Similarly, words like vibe, cringe, or hater stay in English for younger Italian audiences but need expansion in formal contexts. 💡 Slang: A new language? New-generation slang, like rizz (charisma) or brat (popularized by Charli XCX), carries specific cultural vibes. Translating them requires capturing their spirit creatively and understanding new-generation words in your language. 🤝 Blended Cultures English words often blend into target languages. For instance, triggerare in Italian translates 'to be triggered,' and TikTokear in Spanish refers to using TikTok. These hybrid terms reflect cultural fusion but can confuse in formal contexts, highlighting the importance of knowing the audience. ⚡ Striking the right tone! Translators must decide whether to use English terms or adapt them. This requires understanding the audience's cultural and linguistic habits. Our Italian linguist Olimpia Verdossi noted that clarity sometimes requires sacrificing brevity, especially with concepts like empowerment. Social media is reshaping language rapidly, and translating new terms requires cultural expertise, creativity, and a strong connection to evolving communication. Thank you to all linguists for your incredible work! What’s the trickiest social media term you’ve had to translate - or your favorite one? 🍂🦃 Happy Thanksgiving from THG Fluently! 🦃🍂 As those of us who celebrate gather around the table with friends and family this holiday season, we want to take a moment to express our gratitude to our incredible clients, partners, and team members. Your trust in us to connect cultures means the world. While Thanksgiving is a holiday that’s exclusive to North America, it’s followed by another special day - especially for us here at THG Fluently, part of THG Ingenuity and THG! That’s right, the day after Thanksgiving is the notorious Black Friday. Originating in the United States, this shopping phenomenon began in the 1950s and has since evolved into a global event, signaling the start of the holiday shopping season. The term “Black Friday” was originally coined by police in Philadelphia to describe the chaos that ensued on the day after Thanksgiving, as crowds of shoppers and tourists flooded the city. Some managers also used the term "Black Friday" to describe the day when retailers would move from operating "in the red" (losses) to "in the black" (profits). Today, Black Friday represents more than just retail sales. As businesses look to capitalize on this shopping frenzy, it’s essential to communicate effectively with diverse audiences around the world. Wishing everyone a joyful and fulfilling Thanksgiving and a happy Black Friday! #blackfriday #happythanksgiving

Apart from being a very professional and detailed linguist who is generally available–or willing to make time–, he always finds the time to crack a joke or send a friendly emoji. Thanks for your good energy and hard work!" Darya Tonkopeeva added: "Jacek is an outstanding translator you can always count on. Reliable, kind-hearted, and ever ready to lend a hand, he consistently goes above and beyond. Whether you need a translation or assistance with a client's queries, he’s there with professional support and a willingness to help." He’s always willing to help with a variety of Polish tasks be it coding, translation or proofreading and consistently does an amazing job! Thank you for your positive attitude, Jacek! It’s always a pleasure to work with you." Jacek, surprised and delighted by the recognition, shared: "It was with great surprise that I learnt I had been elected THG Fluentlys Linguist of the Month for October 2024. THG Fluently is definitely my favourite client, not only because of the income I receive from it. 😊 The people I deal with at THG Fluently are always very professional, but also extremely nice and pleasant to work with, so it is a joy to work with them. I don’t think I’m doing anything special – I’m just a translator trying to do what is expected from me, always remembering that both THG Fluently and I have the same goal – to keep the clients happy so that they return to us." Please join us in giving a big round of applause to Jacek! His talent and commitment are an inspiration, and we’re so grateful to have him as part of our Linguist Community. Ever wondered when translation started? Translation dates back to ancient civilizations. The earliest evidence can be traced to Mesopotamia around 2000 BCE, where Sumerian, Akkadian, and other ancient languages were translated to facilitate communication across cultures. Translation then expanded in ancient Greece and Rome, where it played a key role in preserving and sharing philosophical and scientific texts. Historically, translation was a purely manual process, requiring deep linguistic expertise and cultural knowledge. However, with the advent of computers in the mid-20th century, the field began transforming. Machine translation efforts, starting with IBM and Georgetown University's early projects in the 1950s, gradually improved with advancements in algorithms. Today, AI-powered tools like Google Translate and DeepL provide immediate translations, although human translators still refine context and accuracy. The role has shifted from pure translation to a focus on quality assurance, context adaptation, and specialized knowledge for tasks like transcreation. Nowadays, translators are evolving into linguistic consultants, cultural mediators, and editors of AI-generated translations. As AI and machine learning continue to improve, human translators will in the future most likely focus more on refining automated translations and adapting content for cultural relevance and specific industries, like legal and medical fields. #Translation #Evolution #AI #MachineTranslation #History

It’s time to shine a spotlight on another incredible team member at THG Fluently – part of THG Ingenuity. Let’s meet one of our Senior Production Managers 🌟 Kimberly Marchant: I started working for THG Fluently in December 2012 as an intern on our translation team, and over the past 11 years, I have progressed to the level of Senior Production Manager, specialising in managing translation work for the healthcare market research, pharmacovigilance and life sciences sectors. From the early days in my career, I always wanted to get into team management to be able to share my project management expertise, and to have a role in shaping the next wave of Project Managers. Being a leader of a global team comes with a lot of responsibilities that you need to balance ⚖️ on a daily basis: your team members, your clients, the needs of the wider business, and daily challenges. My team manage a varied pool of core clients, ranging from market research to e-commerce to entertainment, and they have different requirements which need to be learned and followed. The Project Managers in my team all have different backgrounds and different career aspirations, and I provide them with tailored support and coaching to help them achieve their goals. As a team, we also have specific targets that we need to achieve, and it is my responsibility to ensure that we stay on track and look out for new opportunities to grow and develop our expertise. 🌍 My interest in foreign languages started when I was 11 years old after my first overseas holiday to Spain. Spain always seemed so much more exotic than the UK! I initially contemplated the idea of being a holiday rep/tour guide before settling on languages. Throughout my Bachelor’s degree, I always enjoyed the translation modules that I took and the thought process 🤔 that went into producing a suitable translation for the target audience (be it a medical journal, piece of literature or legal contract), so I decided to complete a Master’s degree specifically in Translation. In my free time, I enjoy cooking and baking 🧁, spa days, weekend walks in a local park 🏞️, exploring London, and going out for brunch or dinner with friends. I also enjoy travel and, while Spain and Portugal have been my favourite countries to visit, since the pandemic (and being a slightly nervous flyer) I have embraced cruise holidays 🚢. This summer I went on a cruise around Iceland, which allowed me to visit several different parts of the country, and next year I will be spending a week in the Norwegian fjords. My future dream holiday is a cruise around the Caribbean islands 🏝️ and central America. #languageservices #meettheteam #behindthescreens #companyculture #teamspotlight
