Empowering Black mothers and transforming maternal healthcare through community support, advocacy & system-level change.

About us

An award-winning organisation recognised by the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Mayor of London, dedicated to transforming the Black maternal experience in the UK. As creators of Black Maternal Mental Health Week, the Black Maternal Health Conference UK, and BlackMums Fest, we lead groundbreaking initiatives that center Black mothers' voices and experiences. Our social enterprise is committed to revolutionizing maternal healthcare through holistic support, professional education, and systemic change. We create safe spaces for Black mothers during pregnancy, birth and beyond, while equipping healthcare professionals with cultural competency training. Through community-led advocacy and strategic partnerships with the NHS, we're building a healthcare system that truly serves and protects Black mothers. From mental health support groups to educational workshops, policy consultation to healthcare professional training, we're driving meaningful change at both individual and institutional levels. Our work bridges critical gaps between Black mothers and healthcare systems, ensuring every Black woman has access to culturally competent care, support, and resources throughout their maternal journey.

This event brought together over 450 individuals, both in-person and online, including students, allies, midwives, the community of Black mothers, doctors, charity CEOs, lawyers, members of parliament, and councillors, all united in our commitment to improving Black maternal health outcomes. We explored crucial themes including addressing health inequalities and achieving equity, mental health and well-being, challenging institutional racism and bias, media representation and perception, pregnancy loss and support, and lived experiences and personal stories. Our esteemed speakers delivered powerful keynotes and engaged in thought-provoking panel discussions, sharing their expertise, insights, and personal stories. Thank you Sandra Igwe , MBA Evelyn Akoto Patricia Balusa Karen Joash Abena Oppong-Asare MP Kelechi Okafor Florence Ekolongeni MPH Doreen Thompson-Addo MCDI Alicia Burnett for their invaluable contributions. As Sandra Igwe , MBA, CEO, Founder, and Host of Black Maternal Health Conference UK, passionately stated, "It is crucial that we continue to create spaces like this conference, where Black mothers and women can lead the conversation and share our stories. Our voices and experiences are powerful tools for change, and by amplifying them, we can drive the transformations needed to ensure equitable care and better outcomes for all." The success of this event would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our sponsors and partners. We extend our deepest appreciation to Leigh Day, Tommy's, NCT Charity Sands - baby loss charity, Baby Lifeline, Southwark Council for their commitment to advancing Black maternal health. Thank you for being a part of this transformative journey. Together, we can create lasting change and build a brighter future for Black mothers and families.

The majority of our Black mothers in The Motherhood Group report that non-clinical, community-focused spaces make them more likely to open up and connect authentically. This is what that looks like in action: The Motherhood Group brought together 60 Black mamas and their little ones at the theatre - creating meaningful connections and reducing isolation that many mothers face daily. It’s important to reimagine what maternal support looks like by building spaces where mothers and their children can thrive together. #BlackMotherhood #CommunityFirst #InclusiveSpaces #MaternalHealth

No, it's not selfish to have an all-Black and mixed heritage team. When I first started The Motherhood Group I was repeatedly asked “why is it only Black mothers that attend your interventions?”. It was frustrating having to over-explain myself to people who didn't understand the disparities Black women face. That's why I'm incredibly proud of creating a team that reflects our ethos. The Motherhood Group's Christmas team dinner moved me to tears, and I'm blessed beyond measure. Eight years of running this organisation, and I can honestly say this has been an incredible journey. And the journey is incredible because of the women I've encountered and brought along with me. 👑 You see me collecting awards, speaking at conferences, and appearing on TV, but behind all of that are these incredible women who keep the wheels spinning. Those commissioned 50-page reports, those four-hour training sessions for healthcare practitioners, those detailed stakeholder proposals, our TikTok account - very little of that is me. Yesterday, I realised this is what sisterhood is about. This is what female social entrepreneurship is about - elevating one another for a common goal. That is truly special. It's a unique experience that many haven't yet grasped, but when they do, they'll understand. ✨ To me, success means using your platform to build up others and having them support you in return. Success means seeing a problem and collectively working to tackle it…Each of these amazing ladies is proof that when we lift each other up, we all rise higher. 💫 This is just the beginning. #BlackMaternalHealth #WomenInBusiness #Representation #BlackWomenInBusiness #Sisterhood #Leadership #WomenSupportingWomen
