Goats and boats and bodies, oh my! Before the Park was developed for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it was excavated by archaeologists who found all manner of hidden treasures buried beneath its surface. Almost 100 archaeologists excavated 121 small trenches and 8 larger ‘open’ area sites throughout the Park, making this one of London’s largest digs ever. Some of the things they discovered included: ⭐ The Park’s waterways have always been a draw for communities to grow around, with evidence of prehistoric settlements dating back to the Neolithic period, including a hand axe from this period, as well as traces of roundhouses from the Middle Bronze Age. ⭐ Four human skeletons were found on the site of what is now London Aquatics Centre, dating back to the Iron Age. A goat was also found buried; this is notable as animals weren’t usually buried in this period when they could be used for food – suggesting this goat held some special significance! With the Roman invasion in 43AD, the site was abandoned, although the wider area continued as farmland. ⭐ An almost entirely intact boat dating from the early nineteenth century. It was made of wood and covered in a thick layer of coal tar to help waterproof it, which is also why it was so well preserved. Within the boat, there was evidence that suggests it was used for hunting ducks and wildfowl, while a child’s toy sword was found underneath the boat. ⭐ Helmets from the Park’s time protecting London, a patch of land called ‘Bully Fen’ near Lee Valley VeloPark housed soldiers during both the Second World War and the Cold War. Anti-aircraft guns were built here and were said to be the first in London to shoot down Luftwaffe bombers in 1940. Today we like to keep our treasures above ground in the form of our glorious Park partners, and if you’d like to feast your eyes on more historic and cultural gems then you’re in luck. Victoria and Albert Museum East Storehouse, a purpose-built archive for over 250,000 objects, 350,000 library books and 1,000 archives from the V&A’s collections, is opening on the Park next summer. This can be enjoyed alongside the rest of the Park’s offering, a colossal culmination of art, entertainment, sports, culture, and education that amasses over 20 million visits a year. Interested in the Park’s past, present and future developments? Follow us to keep up to date. #Archeology #Development #history #eastlondon
