About us
The Humane League UK is an award winning animal charity seeking to end the abuse of animals raised for food. After launching in the US in 2005, the organisation came to the UK in 2016, where it has grown exponentially. We advocate for corporate reforms through hard-hitting animal welfare campaigns, and encourage and support individuals in leaving animals off their plate. We have secured historical wins for caged hens, and are now paving the way for broiler (meat) chickens and fishes. We want to eradicate the worst forms of abuse against farmed animals, and are relentless in our mission to do so.

Earlier this month, we announced that judges had ruled in our favour of our main argument in our landmark legal battle against the UK Government, but also that the case had been dismissed. We understand that outcomes like this are not simple, so here’s our Head of Communications, Hannah, answering some of the questions we’ve had from you.

Last week’s verdict hit the national media, including the BBC. And no wonder it was big news; we believe that last week’s ruling on Frankenchickens marks “the beginning of the end of this type of outdated farming”. https://bbc.in/3ZFpu9B

The verdict is in! After a four year legal battle against the UK Government, alongside the passionate Advocates for Animals | Solicitors, judges have finally ruled in our favour on our main argument - that is unlawful to farm animals who are forced to suffer because of their genes. We believe this makes farming Frankenchickens illegal, meaning farmers who continue to do so will be breaking the law. This judgement is a major victory for the one billion Frankenchickens who are cruelly raised each year for meat. To find out more about this landmark case, read our latest blog post: https://bit.ly/41sXNnd

KFC signed up to the Better Chicken Commitment back in 2019, with the goal of sourcing their chicken from slower-growing breeds by 2026. They have since gone back on that pledge. They are going to continue to use Frankenchickens, birds whose lives are filled with constant pain and suffering, without an end date in sight. This is not okay. #KFCKeepsFailingChickens https://lnkd.in/drKJ3jmp

The work that we do wouldn't be possible without our incredible team of volunteers who spend their time passionately and diligently, raising awareness of our campaigns and speaking up for animals raised for food. This #InternationalVolunteerDay we wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate everything they have achieved this year, from delivering protests to handing out thousands of leaflets and placing stickers in supermarkets, and say a huge thank you for their effort. If you would like to find out more about volunteering with us: https://lnkd.in/e2GCs5ad

KFC UK & Ireland’s decision to keep using fast-growing Frankenchickens is a huge disappointment. The continued pain and suffering of these animals should not be ignored for profit. The head of sustainability at KFC UK and Ireland, Ruth Edge, has said that replacing Frankenchickens with slower-growing breeds is not going to be achievable by 2026. So when will it be achievable? Our passionate volunteers and staff were at KFC HQ this afternoon asking them this important question. Photo credit: Sammi Davis
