We're urging hauliers to respond to the Scottish Government’s consultation on the National Speed Management Review.
Part of the consultation invites feedback on whether the current 40mph speed limit for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) on single-carriageway roads should instead reflect the 50mph policy in place throughout the rest of Britain.
We've long campaigned for this change over many years, most recently during National Lorry Week, when we highlighted the success of the ongoing 50mph trial on the A9. The trial on the A9 has resulted in a clear reduction in dangerous overtaking.
We've also seen evidence of the benefits of this across England and Wales, as they both moved to the 50mph limit model back in 2015.
There are three specific benefits a 50mph limit for HGVs in Scotland would provide:
- It would reduce risky and dangerous overtaking by other drivers making roads safer.
- It would slash emissions due to efficient fuel consumption.
- It would profoundly benefit the economy from faster and more efficient journey times. Not just in Scotland, but across the entire UK supply chain.
We believe that Having HGVs driving at up to 50mph in Scotland would be a positive step, and we welcome the Scottish Government’s commitment to this consultation.
