Did you notice the brightness? 🌟 Probably not. As from yesterday, our Northern Hemisphere days will get longer. 🌞 If it's not Christmas 🎄, Channukah 🕎, or Kwanzaa 🌍 you're celebrating, may it be the increasing (metaphorical and literal) light - gradual and barely noticeable though it may initially seem, depending on which pole is your nearest 🌐. The pressure to be jumping up and down with joy can be too much for some this time of year. So do it your way and enjoy. 😊 My way is to take photos of myself in front of someone else's Christmas Tree. 🎄 But the intention is still true: Happy Holidays to you all, both clients and followers!

You nod. You give advice. You look interested (you think). Then you get the data, recall the script and shove the lot down their faces. This is *not* Active Listening. It's a bombardment. You may recall from those smug-ass pics of me by the pool, that I was working in Orlando last week. Really working not pretend working. A mind meld with Improvisers, Heather Urquhart, Kareem Badr and the mavens at Bounce Medical Communications led to an intensive day of: Active Listening for customer facing advisers in Pharma. Here's just a snippet of what they learned: 👯♀️You are not sitting on opposite sides of the table (metaphorically), but are problem solving as partners. 🕺🏽The body language matters! There are rafts of studies around how your posture and facial expressions shift conversations. 🔑We like people more and feel they're invested in us when they ask follow up questions. An intensive Harvard Study demonstrated that certain types of questions are key to this. What you have ultimately is more than Active Listening. It's Collaborative Problem Solving. And people who engage in it are, according to those studies, seen as “better teammates, advisors” and “more desirable partners for future collaboration.” Here's what it isn't: 💣Immediately contradicting them with your 'facts'. 💣Giving unwanted advice. 💣Staring at others like a stunned rabbit. It was like therapy apparently. Never my intention. I'm not a life coach and certainly not a therapist. However, you can't teach communication skills without peeling away a few layers of the onion. 🧅 The spirit of a person is just as important as the techniques of self-expression. Although those techniques include: ✴️Body language ✴️Facial expression ✴️How you use your voice ✴️Language skills... it's more difficult to do if you don't manage yourself first: 🚫that critical inner voice 🚫All those 'shoulds' 🚫The 'I'm not worth being heard' etc etc. So, yes, I do have deeper conversations. And no, it's not 2 hours of 'move this way' and 'say this then'. That's not communication skills. That's being robot.
