I asked a group of athletes: what do you think about self awareness? Then came the mic drop moment 🎤🚮 An athlete said I think we are self critical before we are self aware. We could have stopped the session then. It comes ever more present to me that who we are being in a space is much more than what we ‘know’ or ‘say’. Participants checked out with: mind blown, wholesome, connected, grateful, ‘not smiled for an hour and half like that in my life without 1 joke said’, conflicted and confused. There were some HUGE and open shares about what it is to be human, never mind an athlete. I do think the athlete mentality is heightened in control, right or wrong, sacrifice and lack of self trust though. And I do believe that the period of retirement is about remembering who you are fundamentally and realising the systems you’ve used to survive may be ‘successful’ in many aspects. The operating system may keep you ‘safe’ in the way that things will remain familiar and normal in your sport…. Even if you are hurting yourself physically or mentally. Because safety hinges on what is familiar to you. If being self critical to get to the Olympics is familiar, guess what you’re going to do when you’re taking a break or choosing your next profession, or even what you loved as a kid!!! The systems we adopt to perform in life keep you part of something and maybe even gain you medals, but when you finish, you’re left with a relationship to yourself that will just keep up to the familiar and what’s known, even if it’s painful. But playing out in a different field. Incredible work from the The Mintridge Foundation - thank you for hosting the day. And thanks to Switch The Play Foundation for bringing me in to such an amazing op. And Dame Kelly Holmes Trust too. All doing amazing work in the athlete transition space 👏🏼

  • Yesterday we were excited to welcome 20 current and former athletes from 14 different sports to our Sport Industry Experience Day in partnership with Wasserman. This is the third time we have run a day like this and we continue to be blown away by the amazing feedback from those who attended. Attendees had a chance to: ✅ Learn about different careers in the sports industry ✅ Network with the team at Wasserman - speed networking is intense but great fun ✅ Engage in masterclasses regarding cv and interview preparation and personal branding. ✅ Learn from the transition experiences of those at different stages of their planning for life outside of sport - a massive thank you Matthew Vandrau Lauren McMurchie and Tobi Sho-Silva for sharing your experiences 🙏 ✅ And… to test their drawing skills (a lovely way to break the ice Matthew Lock ) Thank you for all the team at Wasserman for the amazing welcome and sharing your insights, particularly Karima Green (She / Her) Jordanne Napier and Nino Pettinato for your ongoing support of our work. The feedback from everyone in the room has been humbling to hear. Two quotes which illustrates this… ‘Before today, when I was thinking about finishing my sporting journey, I was scared. Now I can’t wait. I’m feeling very encouraged. I really appreciate this day, how it makes me very empowered’ ‘An unbelievable day spent with Wasserman x StPF. I'm currently starting the journey transitioning out of elite sport and this day offered an invaluable insight into the sports industry and different roles that exist. Staff at Wasserman and StPFare so friendly and want to help.’ This is why we do what we do. Onto our next experience day next week at the National Sales Conference… https://lnkd.in/eyvbqgCF Please reach out if you would like to attend … and don’t forget applications are live for our exciting new 12 month transition programme, Evolve to Thrive delivered in partnership with Dame Kelly Holmes Trust https://lnkd.in/erdJsyRc #careerpathways #networking #connections #sportindustry #curiosity #careertransition
