21DEC24 • 🚢 CS Endeavour assignment: Tuvalu Vaka branch deployment completed Reversing a traditional procedure (whereby a submarine branch is only deployed after its connecting trunk is already in place), 🚢 CS Endeavour laid the Tuvalu cable branch (about 680km) well before the deployment of the Bulikula trunk itself. The Vaka branch tail-end was buoyed-off mid Pacific Ocean on 19DEC24, its marker-buoy left bobbing in the swell, pending future integration of BU3a with the forthcoming trunk, expected within 2025/2026. 🚢 CS Endeavour, mission accomplished, is currently transiting to Fiji, ETA 22DEC24. Pacific Peering’s SMART Cable project between New Caledonia and Vanuatu is the product of years of effort by scientists around the world, and represents the world’s first SMART project. The environmental sensors on this SMART Cable, built by ASN, will help combat climate change, protecting our ocean ecosystems and marine wildlife, as well as save the lives of vulnerable people groups through advanced tsunami warnings. The SMART TamTam cable, named after the traditional wooden slit drums used by the Vanuatu people to communicate across islands, is funded by the government of France through the French national institute for ocean science and technology, Ifremer. Pacific Peering is proud to be leading the SMART development of this important project, and we look forward to working with the scientists at Ifremer to apply this environmental data in protecting our oceans in one of the world’s most scientifically important and at-risk regions along the New Hebrides Trench.
