Q&A with RIOLONDON's Managing Director Lois Eve Griffin Tell us about your journey with RIOLONDON? I've been with RIOLONDON for 6 years now, starting as a freelance designer and through determination and a sprinkle of natural bossiness, I've ended up running the show. The business has seen a lot of highs and lows, but the creative work we produce for our clients today, and the talent we foster never fails to inspire me. We are now seeing healthy growth, with many happy portfolio clients and a wonderful team. Did you always want to be an MD? Getting here was a big life goal. I became a mum at 19 while studying for my degree in Communications. It was hard to forge a career with minimal support and a lot to juggle, but it didn't distract me from finishing my degree and achieving my goal of leading a multi-million-pound business by 40. I've always looked up to strong female leaders, and I knew it was what I wanted. I was told by many that having a child so young "would ruin any chance of a career" but I really don't like to be told I can't do something! If anything it spurred me on more! I truly believe anyone can achieve anything if they set their mind to it. Any career highlights? During COVID I took on 5 "kickstarters", a scheme that supported unemployed young people (18-25) on benefits. After working with me for 6 months, they all went on to forge successful careers in Marketing, Architecture & Interior Design. These talented young people needed someone to give them a shot. It's been incredibly rewarding to be a mentor to such wonderfully talented young people and see them grow and develop into the careers they longed for. What do you love most about your role at RIOLONDON? The thing I love most is the diverse team I work with who inspire and motivate me daily. It's hugely fulfilling to lead and be around such a talented and dedicated group, and I really enjoy keeping them happy and motivated. I firmly stand behind "look after your team and they will look after your clients." By fostering a great team culture, it's staggering what your team will do to ensure collective performance and success. I also love how diverse my role is, dipping into finance and ops one day, putting out fires the next, to sharing design ideas with our creatives. It keeps it fun and a challenge every single day! Lastly, any advice you would like to give? Oh, I have lots of advice at all times (haha), but if I could give something, it would be to all the young women out there aspiring to run their own ship or become a leader. It doesn’t matter what your background is or who you are, don't let anyone tell you you "can't," because you totally can with the right attitude and mindset. Determination, looking after yourself, and a positive mental attitude will get you to where you want to be.
