  • This week marked the second-to-last campus session for our MBA Sustainable Energy Futures cohort 1, focused on Energy Supply and Trading, led by Dr Nikolaos Danias. The session provided invaluable insights into the complexities of global energy markets, which led to some really fascinating discussions. We were also honoured to be joined by Rt Hon. Brian Wilson, the former UK Energy Minister and advocate for renewable energy development. His wealth of experience and practical perspectives deeply enriched our discussions. Looking ahead, we’re excited for their final campus module in February 2025, which will focus on Applied Strategic Management, led by Stathis Tapinos. It promises to be another pivotal moment in our journey toward building sustainable energy expertise. A heartfelt thank you to all for the past two days, wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas and New Year! See you all in 2025! #SustainableEnergy #EnergyTransition #MBA #EnergyLeadership Mary Galbraith Jane Howie, CMgr MCMI Coral Yuan

  • 📢 WHITE PAPER ANNOUNCEMENT! 📜Fairness and Discrimination in Lending Decisions: Multiple Protected Characteristics Analysis. The Financial Innovation Lab is at the forefront of transforming the financial landscape. By fostering cutting-edge research and development, the lab drives innovative solutions that address the evolving needs of the financial sector. Our team collaborates with industry leaders, startups, and academic institutions to create impactful financial technologies and strategies. White paper link below: 📑 https://lnkd.in/gVhstBfQ This is the latest in the FRIL White Paper series: Building on the work of Jain, Bowden, and Cummins (2024), this white paper extends their toolbox to address multiple protected characteristics simultaneously and promoting fairness for all of them concurrently in US home mortgage loan applications. By improving model accuracy through Grid Search based hyperparameter tuning, the paper demonstrates enhancements in correctly classifying loan acceptances. It also offers practical recommendations for integrating human oversight to further ensure fairness in decision-making processes. This comprehensive approach aims to mitigate discriminatory practices and enhance fairness in financial services alongside taking into consideration operational risk (defaults and nonperforming assets) and model classification accuracy. • 📢 WHITE PAPER ANNOUNCEMENT! 📜 Promoting Fairness and Exploring Algorithmic Discrimination in Financial Decision Making Through Explainable Artificial Intelligence. White paper link below: 📑 https://lnkd.in/gfNMQQGm This white paper introduces a comprehensive set of tools packaged as a toolbox designed to make financial decisions, like home mortgage loans, fairer. The toolbox has an ethical foundation in a “rights to explanation” framework. By using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models that can explain their decisions, the paper aims to ensure that these decisions are transparent and just. The focus is on improving fairness, demonstrated with a use case in the US mortgage loan process by using various techniques that do not depend on any specific model. The study also explores how these techniques work in real-world scenarios, considering both equality in opportunities (for minority and majority categories of a protected characteristic) and outcomes (of loan application decisions i.e. rejections and acceptances). It highlights potential challenges and innovations, and examines the balance between fairness and performance, illustrating this by exploring plausibly discriminatory practices that may be age-related. The paper builds on recent research and suggests areas for future study. Join us in shaping the future of finance through innovation and collaboration. #FinancialInnovation #FinTech #FutureOfFinance #AI #FinancialCrime #FRIL #StrathclydeBusinessSchool #SopraSteria #FinTechScotland #GlasgowCityRegion #UKRI #ScottishAIAlliance Kushagra Jain Mark Cummins James Bowden Trish Quinn Giovanna Cucchi Mickael Paris Christine Sinclair John Finch Nicola Anderson
