Earlier this year, an open letter from Patagonia Oatly Tony's Chocolonely & other major companies to the #EU 🇪🇺 called for the criminalisation of #ECOCIDE. Major international businesses penned a letter to Ursula von der Leyen , president of the European Commission, to share their ‘vision for a fair and sustainable economy’. The letter sets out several measures to achieve this vision, including the implementation of the EU’s newly revised Environmental Crime Directive, which criminalises cases that can be comparable to ecocide. Season’s greetings from Stop Ecocide International! ❄️ What a remarkable year it's been for the global #ecocidelaw movement! 🎉 We’ve seen a historic formal proposal submitted to the International Criminal Court 🧑⚖️to add a fifth crime of #ecocide to the Rome Statute, and a massive EU 🇪🇺victory with a revised Environmental Crime Directive criminalising ‘conduct comparable to ecocide’. Plus, Belgium 🇧🇪 became the first European country to recognise ecocide as both a domestic and international crime and national legislation was introduced in #Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, #Peru 🇵🇪, the #Netherlands 🇳🇱, and #Italy 🇮🇹. "We encourage other vulnerable states to take note of our proposal to bring ecocide to the ICC” 🌱 - Ralph Regenvanu, Special Envoy for Climate Change & the Environment for the Republic of Vanuatu In September, the Republic of Vanuatu submitted a formal proposal to the International Criminal Court along with fellow Pacific Island nations Fiji and Samoa, to make #ecocide the fifth international crime alongside the most serious crimes like #genocide and #warcrimes. As a low-lying, small island nation, the Republic of Vanuatu is particularly vulnerable to climate change and has become a powerful voice for climate vulnerable developing nations on the world stage. In particular, Vanuatu has long championed the international criminalisation of ecocide, understanding that the protection of nature is vital in the fight against climate change and that criminal accountability is a powerful mechanism through which to achieve such protection.
