2024 saw us doubling down on this mission, working hand in hand with local communities, passionate volunteers, and dedicated partners to scale our efforts and drive meaningful change 🌳 Here is just a small glimpse of what we got up to this past year: 🌱 We teamed up with the incredible women of the Blue Earth Organization, a community-led group along the Mkupe Conservancy in Mombasa, Kenya, focused on restoring vital mangrove ecosystems. 🌱 We partnered with Kenya Forestry Service and Commonwealth Forestry Association with a focus on reforestation, conservation, and empowering local communities to protect and restore this vital ecosystem for future generations. 🌱 We met with community leaders and collaborated on conservation projects to help drive positive change 🌱 We planted over 3000 trees through our Trash for Trees project 🌱 We cleared invasive species and carried out ongoing conservation work to ensure our restoration projects have the best possible chance at succeeding 🌱 We organised community clean up events to protect our green spaces 🌱 We launched our resource hub filled with free resources for changemakers and businesses on a mission to do good In 2025, we are excited to scale our initiatives, deepen community engagement, and make an even bigger difference in the fight to save our planet. Would you lose trust in a company that shifts its environmental targets to shift the blame and responsibility? 👀 If a brand can’t achieve a 30% reduction in emissions by 2030, rather than working harder to stay on track, they’ll move the goal post to a 25% reduction by 2050. There are many ways companies are greenwashing and one of them is greenrinsing which refers to companies changing their targets before they are achieved. This lack of genuine action leads to a lack of trust, confidence and hope, dampening environmental action due to uncertainties that companies are actually going to make the changes needed to help fight climate change. Our East African Project Coordinator Geoffrey Mboya recently spent time with the Uhembo Widows group in Siaya, Kenya. When he first visited, they were working together informally, united by a shared vision but without formal structures. We encouraged them to take that next step, and now, they’ve done just that—fully registered and thriving as a collective. At Start Leaving a Legacy, we’re excited to walk this journey with them by supporting their beekeeping project, as part of our holistic restoration projects. This initiative not only sustains their livelihoods but also strengthens their community’s resilience.
