One of the largest intelligence compromises in U.S. history is still not fully remediated, reports Kevin Collier at NBC News. This attack on major telecommunications companies sheds light on the importance of safeguarding your communications. Tools like Signal and WhatsApp provide critical protection with end-to-end #encryption in both calls and messages. Other surefire strategies including regularly updating your devices and using MFA. https://nbcnews.to/400wxvh

Threat actors constantly evolve their tactics. Senior Threat Researcher Mark Parsons identifies their techniques like the PCALUA indirect command execution that bypasses controls and moves laterally to target unmanaged assets. Sophos MDR identifies patterns like lateral movement across environments to stop threats in their tracks. Watch the full Threatcast to stay ahead with Sophos #MDR: https://bit.ly/49Nf5h4

Reports of the Akira ransomware group’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. Following a brief disruption to their leak site in October, activity resumed in November with a surge of new victim postings. Sophos X-Ops continues to observe Akira’s operations, with 8 confirmed incidents across our Managed Detection and Response (#MDR) and Incident Response services since the site came back online. Analysis indicates Akira typically delays victim postings by approximately three weeks, with 127 victims disclosed over the past six months. Our research also highlights two active Akira threat clusters, one of which is deploying Fog ransomware alongside Akira’s standard tactics. Their operations frequently involve tools such as network scanners, file compression and transfer software, and remote-access utilities. The evolving #ransomware landscape underscores the importance of continuous monitoring and proactive defense.

Our latest Active Adversary report is out today! This latest report reveals the abuse of trusted applications (more specifically, LOLbins) grew by 51% and outdated servers and weak credentials remain top vulnerabilities. "Without nuanced and contextual awareness of the environment, including continuous vigilance to new and developing events within the network, today's stretched IT teams risk missing key threat activity that often leads to ransomware," says John Shier, field CTO at Sophos. Close exposed RDP ports, enable MFA, and patch vulnerable servers to keep #ransomware at bay. See how to avoid becoming a statistic: https://bit.ly/41rpWuQ
