About us
The Smarter Travel for Essex Network (STEN), is a programme that brings together organisations with over 50 employees, to promote and encourage active and sustainable travel. The network takes a lead on promoting more environmentally friendly modes of transport, which helps in reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality. STEN assists organisations to prepare and implement effective travel plans, that promote walking, cycling, public transport, car sharing and the use of electric vehicles. All underpinned by our vision to create a Safer, Greener and Healthier county; the overall aim is to encourage and enable change to the way people travel around Essex, by promoting a range of sustainable travel opportunities.

We are thrilled to share some wonderful feedback from a headteacher about our recent Bikeability sessions: "Thank you for our three Bikeability sessions. For the first time, we included the entire cohort, not just 12 children, thanks to the bicycles you provided. This is crucial as our children need these skills for navigating busy rural roads. The sessions created a buzz, with children practising and proudly wearing their badges after training. Your support is invaluable for our school." We are incredibly proud to support schools in providing essential cycling skills to children, instilling #SaferGreenerHealthier habitats early! 🚴♂️🚴♀️ #sustainabletravel #activetravel #bikeability

🚨 Safety Reminder 🚨 Drinking while riding an e-scooter is both illegal and dangerous. The consequences are just as severe as driving a car under the influence: you could face a fine, a driving ban, or even imprisonment. Let’s all make smart choices and ride safe this Christmas season. 🎄🛴 #SaferGreenerHealthier #RideSafe #ActiveEssex #Sustainabletravel

🚌Annual Bus Statistics 2024: What You Need to Know The Department for Transport has released its latest annual statistics on the local bus sector in England, and here are the key takeaways: 🚍 Local bus passenger journeys increased by 7% (0.2 billion), reaching 3.6 billion in the year ending March 2024. 🚍While this is a positive sign, it’s still below pre-pandemic levels of 4.1 billion in 2020. 🚍Buses collectively ran 1 billion miles over the past year, consistent with the previous year’s figures. These numbers highlight the resilience of the local bus sector and its ongoing recovery from COVID-19 impacts. With passenger numbers climbing and service levels holding strong, buses continue to play a vital role in connecting communities and supporting local economies. A couple of weeks ago, we attended the Festival of Business, hosted by Essex Chambers of Commerce & Industry 💼🎉 It was an insightful day where we met many people passionate about sustainability and interested in our mission with STEN. Our goal is to help businesses with over 50 employees prepare and implement effective travel plans to encourage and promote sustainable travel. 🚶♀️🚴♀️🚍 We shared a stall with Essex Climate Action Commission, which was fitting as we are both working to make Essex #SaferGreenerHealthier🌱 The event featured fantastic talks and discussions with attendees ranging from college students to established business owners. It was a brilliant and informative event! #sustainabletravel #activeessex #festivalofbusiness

We’re thrilled to share that since the launch of the Essex e-scooter trial four years ago, riders have completed an incredible 3 million journeys! 🌍 These journeys have replaced nearly 600,000 car trips, with an average travel distance of 2.07 km per ride- a huge step toward more sustainable and efficient urban travel. The trial, approved by the Department for Transport, is operated by Dott across Basildon, Braintree, Chelmsford, and Colchester. To celebrate this milestone, we’re inviting residents and users to share their thoughts and experiences to help shape the future of this initiative by taking our survey, by 3 January 2025. If you live or ride in one of these areas, we’d love to hear from you—thank you for your feedback and for being part of this journey toward greener travel! 🌱 #safergreenerhealthier #activeessex #sustainabletravel
