About us

At the DCC, we believe in making Britain more connected, so we can all lead smarter, greener lives. We’re creating this future by digitising Britain’s energy infrastructure. The secure wireless network we’ve built is the digital spine connecting millions of smart meters in homes and businesses across the country to energy suppliers and distribution network operators. Operating under licence, we’re funded by our customers, the energy companies and network operators; we’re directed by the Department for Business, and regulated by Ofgem. The DCC’s secure network will enable energy companies to deliver their services to customers more efficiently and so drive down costs. Smarter, connected homes can enable energy efficiency, helping move Britain to a low carbon economy. Our network will also support the Ofgem-led transformation programme to deliver faster, more reliable switching for energy consumers. This encourages greater competition: consumers will be able to switch provider within 24 hours. Before our network was built, millions of first-generation smart meters (known as SMETS1) had been installed. DCC is working hard to retrofit these meters to our network, so consumers will be able to switch supplier without their meter losing smart functionality. Our secure network opens up boundless opportunities for innovators within and beyond the energy industry. It could be used to support nationwide smart charging for electric vehicles, to facilitate smart buildings and smart cities or to support remote healthcare. By enabling new products and services we will deliver further public good, helping build a carbon neutral Britain. By identifying ways to re-use this valuable infrastructure asset, we will bring down costs for all our customers. We’re already talking to some of Britain’s most innovative businesses about the potential of this network. Imagine what you could do with it.

  • 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 👏 Sometimes, you need to step back from the day-to-day to really take stock of how much has been achieved. This year has seen some major milestones for DCC and smart metering across Britain. We reached 33 million smart meters on the network, including the 20 millionth SMETS2 meter. Our first 4G Communication Hubs were deployed into homes and connected to the network. We held our inaugural Testing Services industry event. We've held on-site tours for Ministers, mayors and MPs. We've published thought-leadership pieces on #fuelpoverty and #decarbonisation. And that's without even mentioning the multiple awards we've won in 2024. As this year comes to an end, we're reflecting on what we've delivered, and how much we've achieved, with the DCC's Year In Numbers. To everyone - colleagues, suppliers, and stakeholders alike - thank you for the crucial role you've played this year in helping us connect Britain, so we can all lead smarter, greener lives.

  • 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 ✅ We were delighted this week to welcome Miatta Fahnbulleh, Minister for Energy Consumers, to our Manchester headquarters at Brabazon House. The visit offered the Minister – whose portfolio covers smart meters, as well other energy consumer issues, fuel poverty and implementing the Government’s Warm Homes Plan – the opportunity to see first-hand how the smart meter network is giving almost 20 million homes and small businesses the tools to manage energy consumption through real-time insights and more accurate billing. It was also a chance to highlight the work we are doing to upgrade and modernise the network for energy consumers. The launch of the 4G Communications Hubs this month will ensure that smart metering services for consumers continue after the planned phase-out of 2G and 3G by the end of 2033. We look forward to working with the Minister by harnessing smart meter data and leveraging the metering network to help achieve Britain’s policy goals.

𝟰𝗚 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ⚡ We’re committed to ensuring reliable and secure connections to the smart metering system, so today we’re proud to announce that new, 4G Communication Hubs are now being installed in homes and successfully connecting to the DCC network.   Developed collaboratively with Toshiba, CGI, Accenture, and Vodafone Business, these 4G Hubs represent a significant evolution for the network and ensure the smart metering system is fit for the future. Smart meters have a vital role to play in Britain’s decarbonisation and net zero journey, so it’s crucial that the infrastructure evolves with the broader technology landscape.   The 4G Communications Hub programme has been a collective effort involving hundreds of people, across multiple organisations, over a number of years. We would like to thank everyone – DCC colleagues and beyond – who has played a part in achieving this significant milestone. One of the first installations this week took place in Staffordshire by E.ON UK 👇 Read more: https://lnkd.in/d4478_pW #4G #smartmeter #decarbonisation #smartgrid

  • 𝗢𝗳𝗴𝗲𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗖𝗖 Following a consultation which formed part of a review of DCC’s future licence arrangements, we are really pleased that Ofgem have today announced that the switching service will remain part of DCC’s licence obligations.   The number of UK households switching energy supplier reached a three-year peak in October 2024, marking a return to pre-energy crisis levels. Maintaining a competitive energy market which can deliver cost savings for consumers facing tough choices to keep warm, safe and healthy in their homes, relies on their being able to switch supplier as quickly and reliably as possible.   We look forward to working collaboratively with RECCo, Ofgem and industry stakeholders to deliver further improvements to the switching service.   Read more on our website: https://lnkd.in/eTCHeeA4
