A little hub with big ambitions to grow the field of systems innovation in the UK

About us

Si Hubs are a global network of local "spaces" for learning about and doing systems innovation - we are the local chapter for the London area. We see ourselves as an open collaborative platform for learning and applying the new ideas and methods of systems change. bit.ly/silondonhub Systems innovation is something new to most of us, so maybe you are not familiar with the concept. This is a new approach to innovation that tries to tackle complex problems and enable transformational change through the use of ideas from systems thinking and new networked ways of organizing; it is an approach that has huge relevance given the complexity of the challenges in the 21st century.

  • Interested in systems innovation means for cities? Here's a panel we hosted with our hub to explore that very topic: https://lnkd.in/ekfAbriG During the event, we heard from three speakers from Bristol, Paris, and London talking about what system thinking approaches mean in their context. Cities are complex systems whose success is dependent upon the interaction between many parts, social, technological, environmental, and economic. However, we are often inclined to divide them up into parts and departments. We focus on optimizing those specific areas while losing sight of the connections between them, the interdependencies, the networks, and indeed the whole, which is required to deliver a good quality of life. Our modern reductionist approach to the management and development of cities has got us to where we are today and is very good when dealing with simpler or complicated challenges - building motorways or apartment blocks - but it is limited when it comes to dealing with complex challenges; indeed the term wicked problem that describes such complex issues derives from urban planning. Such issues as migration and multicultural integration, the challenges cities will face due to climate change, or working to shift a disadvantaged community to a thriving one can all be recognized to be systemic and complex in nature. Systems thinking approaches offer us a fresh perspective on the city as a system of systems, to better understand the complexity of these issues, to work with networks and more decentralized approaches of self-organization. Beyond just a new perspective, systems innovation offers many new methods, tools, and templates for bringing people together in new ways to innovate on a systems-level; which can be vital for enabling people and communities to co-create responses to the key challenges they face. During this 90-min event as part of our Si Cities theme, we will be exploring what systems innovation ideas mean for cities. During the event, we will give a 30 min presentation introducing you to systems thinking for cities. We will give two examples of cities that have taken a systems innovation approach to the challenge of violent crime in and water management in Glasgow and Mexico city respectively.

Just published at Si this article on "how to do actor mapping". In this post, we share a method for building an actor map relatively simply. This approach is particularly well designed for doing participatory mapping, meaning we will have a group of people co-create the map while having a valuable outcome. • The UK Government Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs' Systems Research Programme, launched in 2019, has been applying systems methods across the organisation to support complex decision making. The outcomes of the programme have revealed the many benefits of applying systems approaches to Defra’s work. These include: - facilitating policy join-up - mitigating negative unintended consequences of policy decisions - enhancing the robustness of Defra policy Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eycB_hPw Si Governance Hub

What would it take to create a true ecosystem for systems-level innovation in the UK? That's the question we asked in our recently published guide to the "State of Systems Innovation In the UK" This graphic illustrates the many different areas we need to develop the capacity for systems thinking and systems change around - and of course, interconnect them to get an effective innovation ecosystem.
