I remember 3 years ago, I had a field sales job and it was horribly demanding. I trekked my life out, going from door to door to sell. I desired to evolve into tech sales. At the time, it looked like a daunting task. But it wasn’t, I just needed to plan and take risks. It was then I picked up an MBA form and enrolled in a U.S. university. I didn’t also stop there, I took classes in PowerBI and SQL and mastered the craft of data analysis. Today, everything is history. I’ve gone on to sell over $500k in digital assets and manned several tech roles. Cybersecurity is another thriving path for non-tech natives. In this same Lagos, I was a security guard. Now, we’re about to dine with the Governor of Lagos state 😜 Although being a security personnel felt horrible at that time, at least I knew the kind of job I didn’t want for myself. It was 2013 and I needed a place for my industrial training. It was so funny how I found myself in the premises of Promasidor as a security guard. People, I quit after 30 days 😂 Once my first salary dropped (20k), I picked race 🏃♂️🏃♂️ For me, it was Eko or nowhere, but I’m glad that I can confidently say that I learned the ropes and have paid my dues. This experience taught me a big lesson — never to look down on anyone. The security guard and the janitors go through a lot but earn so little, I do pity them, and I render help as much as I can. My story of Lagos has been that in which I weathered many storms. 🥺 I remember a day I was coming back from work and had to travel from Shomolu to Iyana Ipaja, this particular rain decided to make sure it beats me well well. I was soaked right from the first bus stop to the last bus stop 😂 I use my eye see my ear. This taught me to also render help to passersby. My story in Lagos is an interesting one, I hope yours is too. From attending social events, to seminars in places like Sheraton and Oriental hotels, to applying for jobs physically, to being promoted and to losing my job, to being rejected. I’d say I’ve seen so much. But my journey has just begun. Becoming a graduate in multiple schools and becoming a keynote speaker at several events. I don’t look at opportunities when I see them, I dive into them. This can be your story too. Yesterday, I asked a friend, “what excites you most about Cybersecurity” — here’s what he said. Because it’s one space that comes off as CSR yet professional. I am learning and being paid to protect people and businesses, making sure assets are safe and people do their jobs securely. I am able to giveback to the communities that I serve. While I resonated on this, I realized that the future would be so scary without at least one cybersecurity expert within an organization. I know you might wonder why I write all of these. It might just be that the one of the best career paths to choose from is Cybersecurity — especially if you want to give value and be known for value.
