Growing a Greener Tomorrow: Repurposing Agro Waste into Everyday Materials
About us
Project 'RAW Materials' aims to create a family of sustainable materials derived from agricultural waste, specifically rice straw. Annually, over 21 Million tons of rice paddy is burnt in an attempt to economically & quickly clear the fields in preperation for the next sowing season which is usally 2 weeks after. Starting with Bioderived & Biodegradable compostes for fast fashion, we're exploring material & product opporunities in the Automotive Industry as well as construction.

GREEN (for go) DAY FOR GREEN GRADS We've just hosted a GREEN DAY for London Design Festival for the first batch of our 2024 GREEN GRADS. This is our fourth cohort. We took over the Shoreditch studio of my codirector Michael Czerwinski who generously cleared it completely, assembled loads of chairs, and raided Sainsbury's several times for food and drink. I had the usual "will anyone turn up" nail-biting nerves. But loads of our new cohort travelled from all over to pitch their work to a great crowd of fellow GREEN GRADS - and others who'd come to see what we're all about. Star turns were those already chosen to show with us at the GNCCF Great Northern Events NW ltd in Manchester in October. Each spoke with passion about their particular projects with lots of riveting "show and tell." Watch out for their individual stories separately in weeks to come - and check them out on the GNCCF website. Then we widened the field to "hopefuls" for our GREEN GRADS AT YORKTON WORKSHOPS show in November, sponsored by Pearson Lloyd. We were bowled over by passionate pitches from new graduates with so many clever ideas to make the world a better place. At 5pm we had a seminar I simply titled SHARING, and established GREEN GRADS generously gave up a Sunday afternoon to enthrall a rapt audience with tales of success - prototyping, making, marketing, funding, distributing, promoting and more. So thank you Seb Tam (Blurry Works, who helped organise, and took lots of photos). Plus Will Eliot (Biocrafting Studio), Luisa Charles (FLOAT DIY water-testing robot), Sri Ellen Hollema (Mat Zero solar-powered heating mat for refugees), Elena Branch (The Climate Collection of furnishing fabrics), and Mathilde Wittock (Bounce screens, furniture etc reimagining discarded tennis balls - yes really - you can see them in some of the pics). Earlier, textile artist/eco activist Roberta Schreyer had reported on her latest adventures learning/teaching craft skills in Mexico. And a huge thank you to Oliver Lloyd for calling by literally en route to the Talinn Design Festival, the largest event of its kind in the Baltics. He'd been invited to show Cara, his cleverly-engineered system for rainwater conservation/irrigation, which we premiered at our big show at Heal's last autumn. Oliver shared enthusiastic insights from his recent MA in sustainable futures in Barcelona - and we got a bit worried he would miss his plane... Thank you also Ella Doran of the URGE Collective, inspirational as ever with creative eco insights from industry. She and Urge are great supporters/sponsors of GREEN GRADS *GREEN GRADS, now in their fourth year, are recent UK graduates with ideas to heal the planet. GREEN GRADS IN THE NORTH is at the GNCCF, Victoria Baths, Manchester, October 17-20 Great Northern Events NW ltd GREEN GRADS AT Yorkton Workshops will run November 16/17, sponsored by Pearson Lloyd By which time we should have around 200 GREEN GRADS listed on our recently-updated website - do have a look.

🌍 Celebrating Creative Excellence in Sustainability! 🌱 📢 We’re excited to share FashionUnited’s coverage by Rachel Douglass on the IMDC Royal College of Art and Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차)’s award for sustainability and creative practice! 🥳 Find the article here : https://lnkd.in/d7RrUkmR But as India faces a pollution crisis, the urgency is clear. This October alone, Delhi’s air quality dropped drastically as stubble burning surged, pushing AQI levels over 350—compare that to New York’s 50 today! 🌍 At Renewable Agricultural Waste (RAW) Materials, we’re converting crop waste into value-added products to reduce the need for stubble burning. By creating the world’s first flexible composite from rice straw, we’re kicking off with disposable footwear in hospitality to one day make the footwear industry circular!🩴 🌾 We believe that this waste material's versatility enables us to develop additional composites, expanding to other industries—such as molded car parts 🚗—which could significantly increase the utilisation of rice straw and make a meaningful dent in the crop-burning crisis. 🌎 #EcoInnovation #StartUpIndia #IndianEntrepreneurs #MakeInIndia #ClimateInnovationUK #GreenBusinessUK #NetZero2050 #ClimateInvestment

🌍 The Hidden Environmental Cost of Disposable Slippers in Hospitality 🌍 As highlighted by The Straits Times, disposable hotel slippers are becoming the next big sustainability challenge, much like plastic straws. Most are made from non-recyclable synthetic materials, and billions of pairs are discarded each year, ending up in landfills and oceans. Fortunately, many of India’s top hospitality chains are taking steps towards a greener future. ITC Hotels , Taj Hotels India, The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts are leading the change by implementing sustainability initiatives like renewable energy use and waste reduction efforts. 💚 At RAW Materials, we are tackling this issue with our rice straw-derived alternatives to disposable slippers, helping hotels maintain their luxury standards while drastically reducing their environmental impact. Together, we can ensure that luxury & hospitality doesn’t come at the cost of our planet. 🌱 Check out the full article from The Straits Times here: https://lnkd.in/ewuV67RF #SustainabilityInHospitality #GreenLuxury #EcoFriendlySolutions #BiodegradableProducts #CircularEconomy #SustainableHotels #WasteReduction #HospitalityInnovation
