Developing a strategic source of rare earth minerals for the magnets driving the green transition in EVs and renewables
About us
Rainbow Rare Earths aims to be a forerunner in the establishment of an independent and ethical supply chain of the rare earth elements that are driving the green energy transition. It is doing this successfully via the identification and development of secondary rare earth deposits that can be brought into production quicker and at a lower cost than traditional hard rock mining projects, with a focus on the permanent magnet rare earth elements neodymium and praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium. The Company is focused on the development of the Phalaborwa Rare Earths Project in South Africa and the earlier stage Uberaba Project in Brazil. Both projects entail the recovery of rare earths from phosphogypsum stacks that occur as the by-product of phosphoric acid production, with the original source rock for both deposits being a hardrock carbonatite. Rainbow will use a proprietary separation technique developed by and in conjunction with its partner K-Technologies, Inc., which uses continuous ion exchange and continuous ion chromatography to simplify the process of producing separated rare earth oxides (versus traditional solvent extraction), leading to cost benefits, as well as being more environmentally friendly.

Interim Economic Study confirms Phalaborwa as one of the highest margin rare earth projects in development today. Project economics remain robust against inflation and REE pricing with low operating and upfront capital costs. The study represents a much higher level of confidence in both the processing flowsheet prior to separation than the PEA (published in October 2022). Further opportunities for operating and capital cost optimisation will be explored in H1 2025 alongside separation test work. #RareEarths #RareEarthElements #Sustainability #Innovation #Phosphogypsum #CircularEconomy #commodities #criticalmaterials #energytransition Read the full release here:

China has banned exports of gallium, germanium and antimony to the United States, a day after the Biden administration imposed expanded restrictions on the sale of advanced US technology to China, reports Mining.com. The move highlights the precarity of critical mineral supply chains, and consequences of overreliance on Chinese production. In terms of rare earths supply, #China alone mines 70% of rare earths, processes 87% and refines 91%. And where does Rainbow fit in? We're expected to be one of the lowest-cost producers of separated rare earth oxides globally by reprocessing historic mining waste to extract #rareearths. Our business model will deliver an ethical and western supply chain of #rareearths - critical for #netzero targets, modern tech and #nationalsecuirty. https://lnkd.in/giuENHsv

Rainbow Rare Earths CEO, George Bennett presented at the Mintek @ 90 conference, commemorating 90 years of Mintek's remarkable contributions to mineral and metallurgical innovation. In addition to celebrating Mintek's legacy across the mining space in southern Africa, the conference looks to the future trajectory of the minerals industry, and work the team are advancing to realise #criticalminerals opportunities for South Africa. In 2022, Rainbow chose Mintek’s hydrometallurgical department as its technical partner in South Africa due to its expertise, particularly in ion exchange, and has now run an extensive programme of bench scale testwork and pilot plant testwork on sample product from Rainbow's flagship Phalaborwa Project, producing ca. 35kg of mixed rare earth carbonate for the separation pilot plant. Rainbow is now setting up laboratory facility at Mintek to further optimise the process to achieve expected +99% purity for Nd/Pr, with equipment orders underway. Test work scope has been agreed to purify rare earth feedstock ahead of separation, and the Continuous Ion Chromatography pilot plant is being relocated from the US to Mintek to allow the full focus of the team on these essential next steps as Rainbow advances the Definitive Feasibility Study in 2025 ahead of planned production of Rare Earths Neodymium, Praseodymium, Terbium, and Dysprosium in 2027.

“In South Africa, a $50 million equity investment in TechMet Ltd will support the development of the Phalaborwa Rare Earths project, a rare earth element processing facility that will develop a more diverse, resilient, and sustainable critical mineral supply chain, drive the clean energy transition, and create economic opportunity for local communities", writes U.S. International Development Finance Corporation as it reflects on its record-breaking fiscal year of investments. This investment and endorsement underscores the global commitment to clean energy and the vital role rare earths play in enabling that future. As we advance Phalaborwa, we look forward to supporting local economies, reducing carbon footprints, and meeting the growing demand for critical minerals worldwide. #cleantech #criticalminerals #investment #cleanerergy https://lnkd.in/eWDQjMDc
