The latest National State of Patient Safety report is clear: patient safety, especially in maternity services, is not improving but worsening. Maternal and neonatal deaths have risen for the first time in a decade, increasing by 52.3 per cent between 2017-19 and 2020-22. The data also shows that patient safety challenges are felt more acutely by different patient populations: maternal death rates for black women are almost three times higher than for white women. Health inequalities can manifest themselves in devastating patient safety failures. Underserved and disadvantaged populations often experience poorer access to healthcare, reduced health literacy, and systemic biases - all of which increase their risk of harm. That is why we will be discussing how to target the reduction of health inequalities to improve patient safety outcomes at the #PatientSafetyForum in London on 27 February 2025. Together with leading experts in patient safety, such as the Chief Executive of the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care, Alan Clamp and advocates such as Chief Executive of The Motherhood Group, Sandra Igwe MBA we are engaging a wide and diverse audience to share insights on how patient safety can be embedded as a core purpose on the health system. Our recent report, 'Delivering Effective Treatments for Rare Disease Patients', highlights recommendations for improving clinical trials and health systems to better support individuals with rare and ultra-rare conditions. It also explores ways to enhance patient involvement in clinical trial processes. However, key areas of policy research and action still remain to improve delivery and development of treatments. What area do you think most critical to this improvement? Access the report here👉 https://lnkd.in/dg_gga92

💡#RareDisease policy recommendation of the week: "In reviewing the NHS Workforce Plan as part of its routine review cycle, the NHS should consider how training avenues for rare disease specialisms can be made more accessible, with specific attention to funding. This would support the training and education aims of the Workforce Plan." This is a recommendation as set out by our recent report 'Delivering effective treatments for rare disease patients'. The UK public sector finds itself under mounting financial pressures and facing increasing threats from climate-related service disruptions. Protecting the financial and operational viability of public sector estates in a sustainable way is now an urgent priority. Public Policy Projects had the opportunity to speak with NHS Commercial Solutions about its new sustainable estates framework, which aims to deliver on these issues. https://lnkd.in/gWwcndDp

Climate-related risks increasingly inhibit service delivery for the NHS, leading to financial instability, operational inefficiencies, and significant harm to public and planetary health. Professionals across all sectors of the NHS should take shared ownership of these priorities. Responsibility for their progression can no longer be the sole responsibility of sustainability leads and estates teams. For this reason, Public Policy Projects and NHS Commercial Solutions are assembling key decisionmakers across public sector finance, procurement, operations, and estates to tackle a range of pressing challenges. Come along to support better financial, operational, social, and environmental outcomes. Secure your free* ticket today: https://lnkd.in/d8adyQzA

The 10 Year Health Plan is part of the UK government’s health mission to build an #NHS fit for the future. We've all got a great opportunity to influence what this looks like through the current consultation. If you haven't already contributed, you can do so either as an individual citizen or collectively as an organisation. The link to the consultation can be found in the comments section below. With the impacts of the climate and nature crisis deepening, I was pleased to see the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change providing such a strong consultation response, highlighting the need to ensure the 10 Year Plan puts sustainability and adaptation (ask the people of Tenbury Wells about this) at its heart. With the climate, ecological and biodiversity crisis unravelling, this is key. Failure to tackle the challenges presents a fundamental threat to human health. #ChangeNHS #ClimateChange #Health https://lnkd.in/e3wsbZi4
