A big thank you to our partners 3 SIDED CUBE, Jacobs, British Geological Survey, and Groundwork South for their hard work in developing and improving the Flood Warning Service. We are really proud of this service, which is currently being tested in seven of our nine pilot communities. It features automated groundwater flood warnings and a comprehensive dashboard of information and advice about groundwater flooding. Learn more at https://orlo.uk/SHcmF

With climate change leading to increasingly extreme weather, more homes are at risk of flooding. Safeguarding our homes has never been more important! 🌧️ 🏠 We recently hosted an insightful webinar featuring Jed Ramsay , Project Groundwater Leader, and Rob Pike , Senior Property Flood Resilience Advisor. This session was designed for landlords, highlighting the advantages of Property Flood Resilience and the vital responsibilities that come with it. Our goal? To empower landlords to create safe and resilient homes for their tenants, especially in high-risk flood areas. If you're a tenant living in a flood-prone area, or if you're a landlord looking to enhance your property's resilience, this webinar is a must-watch! We encourage you to share this with your landlord or anyone who may benefit from understanding more about property flood resilience. 🔗 Watch the webinar here: https://orlo.uk/FLTKK

Project Groundwater reposted this
Congratulations to the Environment Agency and their partners for delivering the new #NaFRA 2024, following our most comprehensive and national flood risk assessment to date. Another National #FCERM Strategy commitment delivered. Well done! https://lnkd.in/eY9yKRP7 The elephant in the room remains the non-inclusion of #Groundwater #Floodrisk! 20 years after the first mapping, and a while since we added surface water to the sea and river flood risk sources, it’s surely time to include groundwater flood risk into the picture. Work needs to start now to ensure Groundwater flood risk is part of the next NAFRA update. The development of methods, mapping and tools being delivered within the three Project Groundwater projects as part of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs funded #FCRIP projects, would no doubt be a great help in this vision. Previously, communities vulnerable to groundwater flooding had limited access to information about their risk. But not anymore! We are proud to share that our trial Groundwater Flood Warning Service is now live! The first of it’s kind, it provides automated flood warnings for groundwater flooding, alongside a comprehensive dashboard of information and advice about groundwater flooding where you can get a complete picture of risk for the first time. Here’s some of what it includes: 🗺️ Real-time understanding of groundwater flood risk through detailed flood risk maps 📣 Current and forecast groundwater levels ⚠️ Access to Environment Agency Flood Warnings and Met Weather Warnings Currently, this innovative service is being tested in seven of our nine pilot communities situated over the chalk aquifer of the Chiltern Hills and Berkshire Downs. We will actively seek feedback from residents to adapt and enhance the system over the course of our project. Interested in learning more? Check out the system at: https://lnkd.in/e2bTcGF5

Flooding is in the news again as Storm Bert has wreaked havoc in various parts of the UK. We know that climate change makes storm events - and in turn, flooding - more likely. But, as ever... what about groundwater? Will climate change affect the occurrence and magnitude of groundwater flooding in the future? Rachel May is a graduate water resources engineer at Jacobs and recently received a First Class Masters degree in Environmental Consultancy. Her Masters dissertation was all about how climate change will affect groundwater flooding. Since there is so little existing research in this area, her studies and methods were groundbreaking, and her work moves our collective understanding significantly forward. In this episode, Rachel shares her knowledge - the background, context and methods of her research, and, crucially... her conclusions.
