Who have been our #MoveMoreIn24 Champions this year? Big thanks go to these enthusiastic wellbeing champions, who really care about getting staff moving! They came forward at the start of the year to take part in this Move More in ’24 healthy working campaign and have done a brilliant job within their organisations. Meet 3 of the 17 Move More in ’24 healthy working champions here in these snippets. We first of all feature Jade Mori from Quilter, James Wilkinson from DAI and Russell Smith from Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV). ⭐ Look out for Part 2 in this series to hear from more of the Champions. ⭐ You can still explore tips for active working in the Move More in ’24 hub at https://lnkd.in/ejYbKVEq

    • “The Move More in ’24 resources have been really helpful in positively influencing and informing our colleagues. We are very passionate about promoting active working to colleagues both in our offices and working from home.”

Jade Mori, Support Services Coordinator and DSE Assessor, Quilter PLC
    • “Doesn’t matter how, when, where or who with, just move more!

I believe as humans we sit far too much, for too many things. In a world moving towards automation, we are changing how the human body works in a bad way!”

James Wilkinson, Director, Business Operations and Workspace (UK & Europe), DAI Global UK Ltd
    • “We invited the Posturite Move More in ’24 team to present to our staff about the importance of sitting less and moving more – and the associated health benefits. We’ve had some lovely comments from staff about how helpful the session was.”

Russell Smith, Staff Health & Wellbeing Lead, Tees, Esk & Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust

  • “My opportunity to give back”: James Harrison is one of the Posturite volunteers for the Stroke Association, and we’re very proud of him for supporting people through a tough time. He’s a Connect and Chat Volunteer, and he has first of all been telephoning a gentleman who is a stroke survivor in his 70’s. “My first telephone match was a great character and we both looked forward to the conversations each week. We would often talk about his large family, the canal boat that he lived on and our planned adventures around the world. Both having common interests including travel, hiking and outdoor activities allowed the conversations to flow well. He is recovering well from the stroke. This volunteering was a very enjoyable experience. I was nervous before the first call and did not quite know what to expect, but once we got going it was a positive outcome. I am now looking forward to receiving my next match in the future and being a weekly outlet of conversation to somebody in need.” James sadly lost a close family member earlier this year as a result of a stroke, which fuelled his desire to volunteer with the charity. He saw it as an opportunity to give back and provide for others, whilst also developing his own knowledge surrounding this often life-changing medical condition. Thank you to James, who is one of our busy DSE Assessors. Posturite is an official partner to the Stroke Association and we are fully committed to fundraising and volunteering for this important charity and raising awareness of #stroke. Sarah Price, Nathan Luetchford, Naseem Hussain and Tracy Hughes are also in this #volunteering team – big thanks to them!

  • 👎 The commute came top of things people dislike about office life in our new survey. But what do they like? 1. Social interaction 2. Collaboration 3. Networking 4. Separating home and work life 5. Change of scenery 6. Workspace setup and access to equipment 7. Buzz and energy 8. Productivity from being face-to-face 9. Morale-boosting camaraderie 10. Faster internet 11. Heating and air conditioning 12. More interesting lunch Yes, lunch! ♥️ 🍜 In our new survey ‘The real picture of hybrid working’, participants don’t hold back on what they tolerate, detest, enjoy and appreciate about office life. See the results here: https://lnkd.in/ewNEE9sk There are #ReturnsToOffice happening in certain quarters, so it’s the ideal time to look at these survey results to listen to the zeitgeist of today’s hybrid workers. We can then respond accordingly, and act to make offices enjoyable, comfortable, inspiring and productive workplaces. A few of the pro-office comments: “It boosts my morale to have people to talk to.” “I like being with nice, friendly hardworking people.” “I enjoy being more active and doing more steps in an office day.” And a few anti-office: “I have issues with sensory sensitivity so the office is often too overwhelmingly noisy, bright, and generally busy for me.” “After the effort to sort childcare, dog walkers, proper clothes and transport, you find yourself in an almost empty office talking to people in other offices via video link.” Are the results what you expected? #WorkCulture #HappinessAtWork #RTO

“Exciting for my career”: The University of Derby has awarded our colleague Graham Ashton. BSc. GSR. MSc. Grad.CIEHF. his MSc in #Ergonomics and Human Factors and we couldn’t be prouder of him! “I'm pleased that I am now able to contribute on more complex ergonomic issues and work within new areas.” The course took Graham 3 years, studying part time alongside his Posturite role as Account Manager. “I'm thrilled to have completed the course and widened my knowledge around ergonomics and human factors, especially having had two new additions to the family during this time!” More good news is that Graham has become a graduate member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) and will be working towards achieving Chartership over the next few years. “To be part of this growing institute is exciting and will help me make a positive impact along the way.” In his Masters course, Graham completed modules in: • Fundamentals of Ergonomics and Human Factors • Cognitive Ergonomics and Psychology • Physical Ergonomics • Investigation and Analysis • Systems Ergonomics • Contemporary Issues in Ergonomics and #HumanFactors His final year project was independent research he conducted around hybrid workers being sufficiently supported. Congratulations ⭐

How much attention do musculoskeletal conditions get in the government’s new #GetBritainWorking white paper just out? A fair bit, we are pleased to see. In the Ministerial Foreword, “People in their 50s and 60s struggling with chronic pain like bad joints” is highlighted as a cause of long-term sickness. True, but sadly of course this is not restricted to people in their 50s and 60s. And it notes that “MSK conditions are the most common conditions that affect older working-age people who are economically inactive due to long-term sickness. They were trending down prior to the pandemic but have since risen. Of the rise in long-term sickness among 50 to 64-year-olds between 2019 and 2022, 22% (40,000 people) is accounted for by MSK conditions.” And “The most prevalent primary conditions in people who are economically inactive due to long-term sickness are mental health conditions, musculoskeletal (#MSK) conditions, and cardiovascular disease.” We are reassured by the following points we read in the white paper: • We need “a greater focus on preventing people becoming ill in the first place.” Yes – PREVENTION! • “Rather than writing people off, our reforms target and tackle the root causes behind why people are not working, joining up help and support, based on the needs of local people and local places.” • We need to “support employers to employ people with health conditions, and to keep them in the workplace.” Of course we like to see this - we have been working in this area for 30 years... • “This is not only a mission for the whole government. It also needs genuine partnership with and between, the new jobs and careers service, Mayors and councils, trade unions, private, voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations, the NHS, employers and schools, colleges and universities. This is how, together, we can build a healthier, wealthier nation - driving up employment and opportunity, skills and #productivity.” • The government will be “launching an independent review into the role of UK employers in promoting healthy and inclusive workplaces”. (We’d love to be involved and will be looking to provide as much help as we can based on our experience with employers. Call us 😊) What did you think of the ‘Get Britain Working’ policy? (We’ll pop a link in the comments). Feel free to add your ideas or say what you thought was lacking, as well as what you were encouraged by. We’d welcome comments from everyone especially those who have experienced barriers to work and from health and safety and OH leaders.
