Protecting our environment is at the heart of our future plans. It's why we're building Havant Thicket Reservoir - the first major new UK reservoir in over 30 years. We were delighted to welcome Liberal Democrats MP for Chichester, Jess Brown-Fuller, to site last week. It was a chance to explain how we’re investing in this area to support the environment, and to see progress on the new reservoir. As well as protecting two precious chalk streams in Hampshire, Havant Thicket Reservoir will deliver a significant environmental net gain for the local area, including the creation and improvement of more than 200 hectares of woodland and wood pasture. As the MP for the catchment of the River Ems, we also appreciated the chance to explain how we're developing sustainable long-term solutions for the river. So far, this has included taking one of our local boreholes out of public supply and using it instead to pump water into the Ems during dryer periods when the river needs ‘topping up.’ We look forward to sharing further updates as our environmental plans progress.

How wasteful is Portsmouth when it comes to water? Did you know that our customers have the highest consumption rate in the UK, using 160 litres per day per person on average. This compares to the national average of 142 litres, which equates to around a bathtub full of water each day. We have a target of reducing consumption to 119 litres per day per person by 2050. To meet our ambitious goal, we have partnered with the University of Portsmouth to ‘tap’ into the community’s water habits, with a focus on student halls. Why student halls? According to research, water illiteracy is most acute amongst young adults (18-34), with 66% believing that their household uses under 20 litres per day, when an average family of four uses more than 500 litres per day. To help combat this, the University are looking at water literacy in halls and trialling different ways to motivate people to reduce their water consumption. Touriya Ghadbar is the PhD student looking into water habits more generally across Portsmouth. She said: “What makes this project deeply personal for me is my lifelong connection to the issue of water scarcity [...]This personal connection has fuelled my passion and commitment to making a meaningful difference in addressing water-related issues.” Jim Barker, Head of Water Resources at Portsmouth Water, said: “Water resources in our region are coming under real pressure, due to population growth, the impact of climate change and the need to protect the environment by taking less from it.
