Yesterday, we welcomed Prof Yiannis Demiris from the Personal Robotics Laboratory of Imperial College London at our institute. As an expert in personal assistive robotics, he shared his research approaches towards equipping robots with the ability to perceive, understand and assist humans. To illustrate his work and resulting challenges, he highlighted multiple assistive application scenarios in his guest lecture. Excited to share our latest work "ASFM: Augmented Social Force Model for Legged Robot Social Navigation" at the IEEE RAS HUMANOIDS Conference this week! 🎉 This research, led by Sebastian Aegidius as part of his Master’s thesis at the Personal Robotics Laboratory (Imperial College London), was done in collaboration with the Robot Perception and Learning Laboratory (UCL). Our paper tackles the challenging task of enabling seamless social navigation in human-populated environments. We’ve developed an Augmented Social Force Model (#ASFM) for legged robots, leveraging visual perception to improve human localization and interaction. By refining repulsive forces and pedestrian avoidance behaviors, our model helps quadrupeds navigate complex scenarios—sidestepping oncoming pedestrians, weaving through static crowds, and following a guide through obstructed paths. Exciting day at the Personal Robotics Laboratory! 🤖 We had the pleasure of hosting a group of students from Beihang University.
