We’re wrapping 2024 with a quick review of our work from the past twelve months! Look for more to come on several of these projects in the new year! Sizzle reel by Mira Steinzor & Jase Hueser of team Emily Oberman! Thanks to all of our incredible Pentagrammers, clients and collaborators, and here’s looking forward to 2025!
About us
Our work encompasses graphics and identity, architecture and interiors, products and packaging, exhibitions and installations, websites and digital experiences, advertising and communications. Our 24 partners are all practicing designers, and whether they are working collaboratively or independently, they always do so in friendship. Our structure is unique. We are the only major design studio where the owners of the business are the creators of the work and serve as the primary contact for every client. This reflects our conviction that great design cannot happen without passion, intelligence and — above all — personal commitment, and is demonstrated by a portfolio that spans five decades and all industries.

Pentagram reposted this
Thrilled to see this work recognized by Ad Age as one of the Best Rebrands of 2024. When we started this project, the goal was to honor Reddit, Inc.'s wildly diverse and iconic visual language while streamlining it into something clear, unified, and unmistakably Reddit. A huge thanks to my team at Pentagram, the brilliant folks at Reddit, and everyone who brought this vision to life. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the project! https://lnkd.in/e7DxiUjA

We’re thrilled to share that Ad Age has named the Reddit, Inc. refresh by Natasha Jen and team one of the Best Rebrands of 2024! “Reddit’s impressive rebrand, launched at the end of 2023 (after Ad Age’s 2023 year-in-review stories were published), took the online community brand’s busy universe of visual iconography and streamlined it — positioning Reddit as ‘the heart of the internet.’” Thanks to everyone who contributed to the project! https://lnkd.in/e7DxiUjA

Congratulations to our client US CIO Clare Martorana and her team at the Office of Management and Budget on the publication of this tech policy report on their work to create a simple and seamless government experience. And thank you for your incredible service over the past 4 years!
Today, the Office of Management and Budget OFCIO published our tech policy achievements over the past 4 years. Modernizing Government technology is a marathon, not a sprint, and millions are counting on the next leg of the race to be even stronger. As I pass the baton to a new team, I do it with great admiration for the many partners and technologists like United States Digital Service and GSA who gave it their all over the past four years, and with great confidence that the next team will run even faster in delivering the Government we all know is possible. #AI #Cybersecurity #DigitalTransformation #Federal #Government #impact #modernization #ONCD #CISA https://lnkd.in/gSF_7wpY

Congratulations to Jon Marshall and team on their Dezeen Award!! The Ambessa Play DIY Flashlight won the product design (consumer and wearables) category. With 10 separate components and 16 build steps, the flashlight kit turns learning about kinetic energy and electronic components into a hands-on adventure. The judges said “This product is an amazing tool for children. It’s educational, functional, easy to use, repairable, standalone and doesn’t require accessories. There’s a social story too as each purchase also funds the donation of a torch to an underserved community.” If you’re looking for a gift that helps others while encouraging creativity and collaboration through hands-on play, the DIY flashlight can be purchased directly with free UK shipping from the Ambessa Play website. Designed for kids aged 8 and above, the flashlight is available in two versions (light blue and transparent), and the comprehensive kit includes everything you need to build a kinetic flashlight from scratch.

This weekend the influential artist Carrie Mae Weems presented the 2024 Wendy Evans Joseph Lecture on Art and Architecture in the Great Hall at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. A program of The Architectural League of New York, the annual public lecture showcases artists whose work addresses the built environment, and humanity’s impact on the earth and other living things. The promotional materials for this year’s event introduced a new visual identity for the series designed by Eddie Opara and team. The identity features U_Type, a typeface by MuirMcNeil that explores systematic and algorithmic methods. The typography nods to Joseph’s thoughtful designs, which balance structure and adaptability in spaces that can evolve over time, offering users the ability to modify them to suit their specific needs.

Thanks to Mark Wilson for helping us share this story with his keen insight!
The world’s most storied graphic design firm is getting flack for using gen AI. Now, the legendary designer behind the project has clapped back. For those not following the story, Pentagram shared its work for a government website earlier this week, which used illustrations produced by Midjourney, prompted and inspired by handcrafted samples from Pentagram designer Bruno Bergallo. Paula Scher led the project, which has divided the design world into two—those who feel it’s cutting edge, experimental work that Pentagram should be leading, and those who feel betrayed and put out of work by an algorithm. But in a conversation we had this week, Scher—a designer as outspoken as she is accomplished—did not apologize. In fact, she doubled down on the design strategy behind the work, and called on her industry to wake up and embrace change, just as she, now 76 years old, has. “If someone else wants to draw 1500 icons every other week, they can do that,” she says. “We will use the best tools available to us to accomplish the ideas we have.” I’ve written 14,000 articles at this point in my career that have freely trained a machine that will eventually replace 85% (or more 😅) of what I can do. Still, I firmly stand with Pentagram on this one. (Can you lead an era of anything while ignoring its most powerful tools?) And I urge you to read Scher’s full argument in our exclusive story on the topic in the link below

“The whole notion of the site was to correct (government bureaucracy) by creating a site that could run all by itself.” In a conversation with Fast Company Global Design Editor Mark Wilson, Paula Scher talks about her use of generative AI in the redesign of the Performance.gov website. https://lnkd.in/etrEeBSy
