  • Cat abandoned in filthy flat rehomed for Christmas Freya and Minnie, two starving cats abandoned in a filthy flat in Wigan, Greater Manchester, were rescued by the RSPCA after being trapped for nine days. The pair had desperately tried to escape, with one cat clawing through a gap under the door to get attention. Inspectors, with the help of Greater Manchester Police, discovered the flat in hazardous conditions, filled with clutter, empty food bowls, and piles of faeces. Both cats were severely underweight, with Freya weighing only 1.1kg, far below the average weight for her size. They were put on a special diet to regain their health before being rehomed. Freya now lives with her new owner, Helen Howlett, in Warrington, Cheshire, where she has become a loving and playful companion. Helen described Freya as affectionate and hilarious, bringing immense joy to her and her partner’s lives. Freya often leaves toys outside their bedroom door, invites them to play, and sleeps snugly between them. Meanwhile, Minnie, Freya’s black-and-white companion, has also found a new loving home. The RSPCA revealed a significant rise in pet abandonment cases, with a 23% increase over Christmas last year. The man responsible for neglecting Freya and Minnie was sentenced to a 12-month community order, 100 hours of unpaid work, and banned from keeping animals, ensuring justice for the neglected pets. • Elderly dog finds forever home in time for Christmas Rookie, a dog once in poor condition due to neglect, has found a happy ending after a long and challenging journey. Initially, his owner failed to follow through with prescribed treatments, leaving Rookie in severe pain. When he was taken into the care of the RSPCA, vets initially recommended euthanasia, but round-the-clock care at Birmingham Animal Hospital helped him recover. During his time in isolation for ringworm treatment, the nurses affectionately nicknamed him "Sir Rookie." After spending Christmas 2022 at the Birmingham Animal Centre, Rookie moved to a foster home in March 2023. In August 2024, he faced another hurdle when he required emergency surgery to remove his spleen and a benign mass. Thankfully, he recovered well, and the day after his surgery, he was officially signed over by his former owner, marking the start of a new chapter in his life. His foster family, Malcolm and Brenda Britton, formally adopted Rookie and have showered him with love and care. The retired couple from Halesowen expressed how deeply they adore him and how he has become the center of their lives. After all he endured, they believe he deserves to be spoiled and cherished. Now, Rookie is enjoying life in his new home, where he is truly part of the family. His new owners even created a personalized flag in his honor, which they proudly display in their garden. Rookie's story, filled with trials and triumphs, is a testament to resilience and the power of love and care. For more visit: www.pawsperfecto.com

  • Owner needed plastic surgery after Cane Corso turned on her during dog attack A woman in Yorkshire required plastic surgery after being attacked by her Cane Corso while trying to separate her pets during a fight at home. The incident occurred as she attempted to intervene when one of her Cane Corsos attacked another family dog. She sustained serious facial injuries and was hospitalized for surgical treatment. The following day, South Yorkshire Police responded to a separate incident where another Cane Corso bit its owner as she tried to stop a fight between the dog and an XL Bully at the same property. Both Cane Corsos involved in the attacks were seized by police and later surrendered by their owners. Chief Inspector Emma Cheney urged pet owners to remain vigilant and mindful of their pets’ behavior, especially during periods of routine changes or high stress, such as holidays or family events. She emphasized the importance of adapting routines to ensure the safety of both humans and animals, particularly when dogs show signs of stress or anxiety. The incident comes amidst heightened concern over dangerous dog breeds, with figures showing a nine per cent increase in dog attacks despite a recent ban on XL Bullies in England and Wales. The legislation requires owners of XL Bullies to meet strict conditions, including neutering, microchipping, and ensuring the dogs are muzzled and leashed in public. • Vet killed himself after becoming distressed at wealthy owners asking him to put down their pets Dr. John Ellis, a skilled veterinarian, tragically ended his life using euthanasia drugs after struggling with the moral and emotional demands of his profession. He found it deeply distressing when affluent clients refused to pay for their pets’ treatments, while financially struggling individuals often sought help too late. The disparity in attitudes toward animal care weighed heavily on him, alongside the pressure of his workload and financial difficulties. In addition to his professional struggles, Dr. Ellis was also facing turmoil in his personal life. He had been secretly cheating on his long-term partner, Ashley James, for two years, a fact revealed only after his death. The emotional conflict of maintaining a "double life" and planning to end his relationship added to the significant stress he was already under. On the evening of his death in November 2022, Dr. Ellis obtained a lethal dose of medication under false pretenses, claiming he needed it to euthanize a dog. He later called both his partner and the individual he was having an affair with, expressing regret and love before ending his life. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after. The coroner highlighted the lack of safeguards around access to veterinary drugs as a contributing factor to the tragedy, issuing a report to address this issue. Dr. Ellis’s family, devastated by his loss, described him as a compassionate professional whose love for animals was evident in his work. His passing underscores the importance of mental health support and stricter controls in high-pressure professions. For more visit: www.pawsperfecto.com
